For about 6 months I drove a DKW (Der Kliener Wunder). 2 stroke engine. Filled the gas tank with oil and gas. You could hear me coming from a mile out.

The ultimate in ground effects, a car that sucks itself to the road:

The Chaparral 2J, AKA "the sucker car"

A centrally-located snowmobile engine drove the two rear-mounted fans, which sucked air from underneath the car. Competed in the defunct Can-Am series. It was faster than stink but unreliable (nothing to do with the snowmobile engine or the massive downforce).

Clear plastic VW, so that you could see the engine et al.

It's interesting how well "weird" used to sell elsewhere on the planet. For a little while, the most sophisticated (though poor-selling) Ford available in North America was a German-built car badged as a "Merkur", a solid hit in the U.K. as the Sierra (particularly in Cosworth trim). Ford definitely was gunning for Saab with the Sierra/XR4ti.

Pity they didn't step back from the drawing board and notice the various bits and pieces that could've been combined. The Sierra/Merkur would've been a monster with the 3.0 Ford/Yamaha engine designed for the Taurus SHO. A few such swaps were done with very good success.

I didn’t actually drive it, but once I sat behind the wheel of the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile.

Domestic manufacturers have been known to sabotage or hamstring high performance cars based upon a lower tier model in order to protect their high margin vehicles further upmarket. Same thing happens to pickup trucks and SUV’s, afraid of cannibalizing sales and losing profit margin. Automobiles for many decades were more of a luxury or a toy outside of North America, so they didn’t quite have the heavily conventionalized expectations that Americans had. This could be bad in the instance of desirable vehicles that were judged “too weird,” or this could be good as far as demanding reliability and ease of maintenance. What we’ve ended up with now is increasingly dull, though, so we lost something along the way in my opinion.

Opel GT. You had pull a mechanical lever to flip open the headlights.

A friend of mine replaced the manual transmission in his 65 Chevy II with automatic. He repurposed the clutch petal as a shift lever. Pulled all the way out with his toe, for 1, push in 1 click for 2, then D, then R. Push all the way to floor was Park.
