Research firm eMarketer cuts TV ad-spending forecast on accelerating pay-TV declines
Winter is here for cable and satellite TV operators.
American consumers are cancelling traditional pay-TV service at a much faster rate than previously expected, according to research firm eMarketer.
In 2017, a total of 22.2 million U.S. adults will have cut the cord on cable, satellite or telco TV service to date up 33% from 16.7 million in 2016 the researcher now predicts. Thats significantly higher than eMarketers prior estimate of 15.4 million cord-cutters as of the end of this year. Meanwhile, the number of cord-nevers (consumers who have never subscribed to pay TV) will rise 5.8% this year, to 34.4 million.
"Younger audiences continue to switch to either exclusively watching [over-the-top] video or watching them in combination with free-TV options, said Chris Bendtsen, senior forecasting analyst at eMarketer. Last year, even the Olympics and [the U.S.] presidential election could not prevent younger audiences from abandoning pay TV.
Overall, 196.3 million U.S. adults will have traditional pay TV (cable, satellite or telco) this year, down 2.4% compared with 2016, eMarketer predicts. By 2021, that will drop to 181.7 million, a decline of nearly 10% from 2016. The number of pay-TV viewers 55 and older will continue to rise over the next four years, while for every other age cohort the subscriber tallies will decline.
By 2021, the number of cord-cutters will nearly equal the number of people who have never had pay TV a total of 81 million U.S. adults. That means around 30% of American adults wont have traditional pay TV at that point, per eMarketers revised forecast.

Same here. We’re saving over $100 month and still get the basic channels, Hulu, Netflix and Amazon.
According to this article, 20.5% of US households were cable free two years ago:

Who the hell wants to pay for all those commercials? I run a commercial killer program on my computer—I haven’t seen a commercial in 2 years! Ahhh!
Internet video/streaming.
We will wrap up 3 months at the end of this week, and I have enjoyed every afternoon/night and day.
My wife had some problems at first. She can now get what is available re what she wants to watch with the controls.
She loves not having local or Faux news on in the morning, at noon and the evening and maybe at night before going to bed.
We have the local Nixle texts for police and fire warnings.
We have both discovered Wunderground weather, and we have that on our smart phones and my Fire pad and chromebook. No Gorebull Warming BS and lies, just weather and good predictions. There two reporting stations about 300 yards from us in different directions. I was thinking about up dating from my basic Acurite system to a more expensive system. Now, I can save several $ hundred with those stations so close.
If the BLMers or undocumented citizens are killing each other in Oakland, East Bay, Gay Frisco, San Jose or La Raza, aka LA, we really don’t need to know nor want to hear about it.
Who cares if Levi Stadium for the Former Niners isn’t half full for their worthless BLM games. Now, their lying mediots are still ignoring the BLM factor and are blaming lack of attendance on: “It gets too hot on the East side of Levi stadium!” Sure thing Buck!
Is your home and safe and your people?
What’s over-the-top about internet streaming?
H50 is one of the few shows, we watch besides the NCIS and Scorpion shows. My wife likes Madam Secretary, another CBS show. Our grandkids and we like the Big Bang Theory.
We pay $5/month for CBS live and basically every CBS show ever on.
This website has some info on over the top video/streaming:

We also have dish with a million unwanted channels. But with 5-6 people living here, and all watching different things, I don’t know how to cut the cord. We have Netflix, Hulu, Amazon prime. We have the hockey channel. But all the other things, the endless tennis that makes mom so happy, the reality shows like AGT that the kids can watch with us, the cartoon networks, the college football, the hated news (and beloved Hannity)... I don’t know how else to do it.
Thank you. Got it now.
We took in some neighbors... and set up an old gas generator for other neighbors so they wouldn't lose their food. ( an old gas generator I had ‘donated’ years before - - didn't want to store it in the garage). When I got back home there were some small trees limbs and debris in the yard... and not much of that. It's was a win - still hate Hurricanes. Thanks for asking Grampa Dave...
So, if you want local and national live sports events, what do you do? NFL, NASCAR, for instance?
Cough, cough, and the nightly news?
Thanks! I will check this out.
You’re welcome. :D
We have been TracFone users for over a decade.
My wife is a high texting Mother, sister, SIL, grandmother, aunt and friend.
Her cost is very small:
$5.00 For
TEXTS FOR YOUR PHONE
1,000
We buy the yearly plan for calls and data, at cheaper rates than any other providers.
#8 I am afraid you are correct. I pay $42/mo with Spectrum here in California and my sister pays $65 for Comcast internet in Minnesota.
Are saying verizon rates are cheaper at Wal-Mart?
Yes and even cheaper via Tracfone phones like my Tracfone Samsung Galaxy Sky, I got from Amazon. $100 for the phone and about two hundred $’s per year for the service. I will spend about an extra $15 for a lot texts.
That phone is now carried by Tracfone for $90. Go to their site, enter your zipcode and see what phones are available in your area. My wife’s uses AT&T and my phone uses Verizon. Nice incase one system is down or overloaded.
