In the true story of the Von Trapp Family Singers, not the fiction of the movie Sound of Music, the family first took a tour of Europe to get away from Hitler and the Nazis.
When that tour of Europe was done, they decided to come to America.
Maria made the mistake (by accident) of saying they intened to stay in America and were not just visiting.
Basically, it was the policy at that time to detain/imprison people wanting to enter the US at Ellis Island.
This was hard especially for Maria as she had a small baby at that time.
Compare how she was treated (a well respected performer) versus the DACA folks.
To say these DACA folks have the right to stay is wrong.
PING
Didn’t FDR turn away shiploads of Jews trying to escape Germany? Or am I misremembering?

There was a movie made about that. It ended badly for them (in real life). They were sent back to Europe.
Trapp Family.
The “Von” was added for the movie, for some unknown reason.
Article by the Holocaust Museum:
I’m surprised Republicans didn’t bring up FDR’s action when being castigated for not having open borders. Maybe no one thought of it. Or the GOP is not only the stupid party, but cowardly as well.
They wouldn’t have become professional singers if Austria had had the equivalent of the FDIC.
Traveling with their musical conductor, Rev. Franz Wasner, and secretary, Martha Zochbauer, they went by train to Italy in June, later to London, and by September were on a ship to New York to begin a concert tour in Pennsylvania. Son Johannes was born in January 1939 in Philadelphia.
When their six months visitors’ visas expired, they went on a short Scandinavian tour and returned to New York in October 1939. They were held at Ellis Island for investigation by the Immigration and Naturalization Service, apparently because when asked by an official how long they intended to stay, instead of saying “six months,” as specified on their visas, Maria exclaimed, “Oh, I am so glad to be hereI never want to leave again!” The Story of the Trapp Family Singers notes that they were released after a few days and began their next tour.

The captain then steered the St Louis towards the Florida coast, but the US authorities also refused it the right to dock, despite direct appeals to President Franklin Roosevelt. Granston thinks he too was worried about the potential flood of migrants.I wonder how much of that worry was because they were Jews.
They live in Stowe, Vermont, about 10 miles from where I grew up. I've met some of them.
Nice folks.
No, he was a "Ritter" (Knight) and thus entitled to the 'von'. When the socialists took over Austria after World War I, they abolished the titles, but von Trapp was entitled to Italian citizenship, and Italy retained titles.
So, in Austria, the country that awarded the title, he would have been called Trapp; in Italy, whose ships he sank, he would have been called von Trapp.
Oops, I see you were talking about the boatload of Jews, not the Trapps.

Herr von Trapp entered the US as an Italian citizen with an anchor baby born in Philadelphia on an earlier visit.
The real Maria actually was re-married. When she first learned they’d make a movie about the family she feared she might end up portrayed as a total slut. She had real complexes about her previous marriage.
As it turned out she was delighted with her movie portrayal.
That whole bit about The Captain at first being a yuuuuge meanie? That was all made-up, in real life the dad was a total sap, a big softie.
They really were famous as a singing family, though.
My husband and I stayed at their Lodge in Stowe, VT about three years ago. (It was on my bucket list...ha!). I was thrilled to have been able to meet two of Maria’s grandchildren (Sam and Kristine -I think was her name, as well as Johannes...Captain and Maria’s youngest son...now in his 70’s??? I have also traveled to Salzburg...twice...yea, to say I am a fan, would be an understatement. Lol
If Maria had been Mayan Mexican instead of Arian Austrian they would have fought to let her stay...
Democrats had a sort of DACA in early American history, and fought to keep “Negroes” in the country...
but for the wrong reasons.
Okay, who’s going to ask that monuments and references to the democratic party be banned all around the country?
