The business has operated, under several owners, since 1782. Loyal customers say they can buy door knobs and hinges elsewhere, but they won’t be able to replace the bonds they’ve made with Elwood Adams’s staff on Maine Street.

Did I need to tag it with sarcasm?

I have to venture into that cesspool every day.

Gracious. An old hardware store. Few have survived the box stores in New England.

When we moved from a small town [population under 3K], with a wonderful hardware store, where we traded for years, I was crestfallen, b/c my new town had no small hardware store; Need for a simple *S* hook, I went to a Home Depot nearby; after 45 mins of trudging around with a very nice clerk, we couldn't find one. Fast forward about ten years, happened to be in the area of my old hometown hardware store, and the second I walked in Art, the owner, greeted me by my name. I was blown away. In 2 or 3 quick steps, he found what I was looking for.

Some things are best left unchanged.

FWIW, the very BEST hardware store in New England was the Clinton Hardware Store; always had anything you needed; I loved the stuff on the shelves, layered with the dust of decades. Goodness. The things you could find. [Need a key for your roller skates? Got it. Aisle 2.]

I had the pleasure of visiting the Springfield bus terminal when I was younger. Once.

Heh. Keep your windows rolled up and doors locked.

My sympathies.

Is the *Student Prince* restaurant still there? We love Donut Dip, West Spfld. :) Otherwise, we keep to the highway and go right through.

The Big E has become such a circus. I took my GD a few years ago so she could experience it. I’d never go again. Ever.

The Student Prince is still here. It remains a gem in the pile of excrement that is Springfield.

I grew up here, went away for about four years and then came back to work. In those four years the place just tipped over into a hell hole.

There have been 16 murders this year—which is not a record, but still bad.

The gang stuff here would make your hair curl.

And the Big E? I go once every 5 years or so. I am not sure if its gotten worse, or if my taste has gotten better. If you can score free tickets, its still worth an afternoon.

Thank God one hardware store is in my area that carries the hard to find more localized stuff. It is ten miles away and I just have to make the trip sometimes. There is a second one too but have to check it more.

I wonder what their oldest piece of unsold inventory is?

Maybe fruitcake from their 1783 Christmas display?

The German food at the Prince is pretty good. But I bet if the Health Dept. ever went into that place [or if they turned up the lights] it would be closed down. I don’t want to think about what the kitchen looks like. GAAAAAAAAAAAAAK!

We have another German restaurant here in CT; East Side in New Britain; food is equally good....and I would venture to say, it’s pretty clean.

That’s about the same rotation we used to do for the BigE...every few years. To me, all the food is about the same, nothing that will knock your socks off. The state buildings are just as I remember them, as a child. The 4H displays are the same; love to see the 4H kids with their critters. Other than that, the parking sucks and I hate crowds; so I doubt if I will ever go again.

Fond memories from my childhood of the Forest Park Zoo; dad used to take us for the day, mom would pack a picnic. We loved the feeding of the lions about at park closing ...we lingered to watch it. Cool beans! :)

Have they rehabed the areas where the tornado went through? or are they still a wasteland?

Be safe. Don’t wear gang colors. :)

Worcester is OK. I was kidding about it being worse than Springfield.

I spent many years doing contract work for Assumption, WPI, and Worcester State. Driving in that town is horrible and I don’t think the connector to the Turnpike has ever been without massive Construction. Are they ever going to finish 290?

My sister married a Holy Cross guy and she did all right. She met him at a dance on the campus.
