Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz loves football and Jesus Christ, not necessarily in that order.
The second-year signal-caller recently gave a sermon at the First Assembly Church in Fargo, North Dakota, his hometown.
The myth in our world, in our society, Wentz told the parishioners on June 28 according to WDAY TV in Fargo, and even in the church, is that if I just have faith in Jesus, and I do enough good, that Ill have salvation. You see thats wrong.
The truth is faith alone in Jesus Christ is what equals salvation plus the works. Its not just for the pastors to tell the world about Jesus. They cant reach the majority of people that we can. We all have to work together to make a difference.
He quoted Ephesians 2:8-10 in his sermon, which reads, For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are Gods handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Wentz, the Eagles first round pick in 2016, became very religious as a North Dakota State freshman.
You raise the young man to go to church, but a little light came on his freshman year, his father Doug Wentz told the Forum News Service in Fargo. He tackles that just like he does buying a hunting dog. He learns and he digs.
Carson Wentzs deep faith helped keep him patient as he sat on the bench his first two years at NDSU.

Grounded... not benched.
Stay strong Carson!!!!!!
Don’t give into these enemies of God.
John 15:18 - 27
If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember what I told you: A servant is not greater than his master.b If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: They hated me without reason.
When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Fatherthe Spirit of truth who goes out from the Fatherhe will testify about me. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.”
Perhaps Carson Wentz has provided an extract from Saint Paul that will help all of us in examining the issue of Salvation by faith alone or faith plus works:
Ephesians 2:8-10 — For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are Gods handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
I have believed that we get our salvation as a gift from Jesus, but that we should demonstrate our faith by how we live our lives, aka, ‘our works.’
The early reformers had it just right: we are saved by faith alone, but not by a faith which is alone.
The early reformers had it just right: we are saved by faith alone, but not by a faith which is alone.
A pastor is going to start on Sunday for the Eagles.
I agree. The salvation is by grace. Afterwards, we were created in Christ Jesus, “which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.”
So, even the works are a gracious act of God that our doing demonstrates the reality of our salvation.
Therefore, no good works equals no path prepared by God equals no relationship with God.
Chaplain, thank you.
Fantastic! But beware Carson, they ran Tim Tebow out of the league for his faith and that was AFTER he led the Broncos into the playoffs and got them a win.
Carson isnt unconventional as a pro quarterback. The Eagles expect him to be a crucial factor in their ability to compete. Also, the Eagles aren't owned by a star quarterback, and they dont have any likelihood of getting an established star to replace Wentz.
“Grounded... not benched.”
LOL. Benched was my first assumption from the title knowing the current state of the NFL and PC culture in general.
Thanks for the ping, and for the quote of Ephesians 2:8-10.
There's a big difference between "religious" and "Christian". Mohammedans are religious. Wentz sounds like a Christian.
Good to hear this. I bet Wentz is probably friends with a great Christian witness and my favorite quarterback, Derek Carr.
