My worries over this vulgar Hollywoodising of the young royals
UK Daily Mail ^ | September 7, 2017 | Max Hastings

Prince Harry’s girlfriend, gorgeous U.S. soap star Meghan Markle, stars on the cover of the forthcoming issue of Vanity Fair, in which she is billed as his likely wife. She herself says: ‘We’re two people who are really happy and in love.’ To make the front of Vanity Fair is the dream of every Hollywood actress. Even the biggest and best would kiss the shoes of veteran editor Graydon Carter for the privilege.

She and her husband are the only worthwhile royalty. I’d add in Princess Anne but she looks such a rat bag for a still FAIRLY young woman.

Are looks your criterion for whether or not someone is worthwhile? Good character, hard work, and many years of work for charity aren't as important as the fact that someone isn't classically pretty, after a life spent working outdoors?

Yes, I do think appearance is important. The Queen looks lovely at all times. Princess Anne is indifferent to her appearance. And, by the way, I did praise her so what is your point?

The Windsors are very, very rich on their own. And the Queen and her husband set an example of how to behave in public. They are the ultimate greatest generation.

What has the family done for the country in the past 70+ years, beyond use of resources, horde their castles, and provide tabloid headlines?

They're an industry. They are an enormous tourist draw, attracting millions of tourists (and tourists' money) from all over the world. They contribute enormously, and purposely, to the British economy. The companies and activities they support provide great numbers of jobs and pay considerable sums in taxes. Unless you go there and see it for yourself, you cannot comprehend the powerful effect they have on the British economy.

They failed the country, also raised bad kids. Look what has happened to the country! Destroyed, the people cowered, overrun, London now led by an Islamic terrorist, okay, maybe just apologist. No one respect England anymore.

They don’t run the country.

I don't know why you say that Anne is indifferent to her appearance. I've seen many photos of her when she was dressed and made up for some public appearance, and she looked as nice as any other middle-ages woman, with her hair, nails, makeup, and clothing quite elegant. I have also seen her on an event course, windblown and half-frostbitten, paying no more attention to her looks than any other country woman in a place where makeup and hairdos would get you laughed at as vain and unserious. Though all of us ladies in hunting/eventing clean up very well for the hunt ball or charity functions, we absolutely don't bother when we're out in the mud and manure. Perhaps your lifestyle offers less involvement with filth. So, for that matter, does the Queen's.

And, by the way, I did praise her so what is your point?

My point is that you wrote that you would consider Princess Anne worthwhile except that she looks like "a rat bag." So being unattractive means, logically, that she isn't worthwhile. And I think that is a remarkably shallow way to assess anyone's character.

FWIW, Princess Anne seems like oen of the very few royals worthy of respect.

" Inspector James Beaton, Anne's personal police officer, responded by getting out of the car in order to shield her and to attempt to disarm Ball. Beaton's firearm, a Walther PPK, jammed, and he was shot by the assailant, as was Anne's chauffeur, Alex Callender, when he tried to disarm Ball...

...Ball then directed Anne to get out of the car, to which she replied: "Not bloody likely!", and reportedly briefly considered hitting Ball. Eventually, she exited the other side of the limousine as had her lady-in-waiting, Rowena Brassey. A passing pedestrian, a former boxer named Ron Russell, punched Ball in the back of the head and then led Anne away from the scene....

...At the age of 21, Anne won the individual title at the European Eventing Championship, and was voted the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1971. For more than five years, she also competed with the British eventing team, winning a silver medal in both individual and team disciplines in the 1975 European Eventing Championship, riding the home-bred Doublet. The following year, Anne participated in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal as a member of the British team, riding the Queen's horse, Goodwill...."

Beats a silicone-injected Hollywood type any day of the week, in my book.

...I don't think a prince who can get a girlfriend who looks like this needs worrying about:

With all that money and fame he can get thousands of women who look as good or better than her.

While I really don't care about the British Royals I do hope that she is actually in love with him, he with her, and that they have a long and great marriage with lots of children.

That would be a good story to me.

Off with their heads.

That used to be funny, but now with so many muzzles in the UK it sounds like a credible threat.

Very true, unfortunately. But alas, the mayor of London says this is normal in big cities.

IMHO a woman in hunting gear, out in the woods, with a rifle or shotgun in her hands is ten times sexier than one in a gown, and I have been to quite a few tux and gown functions.

I also think one of the best looking things is a woman in jeans with a sidearm. Forget the low-cut tramp stuff the young girls like to wear today, I like the women who pack heat.
