That’s the story the prosecution came up with for a number of reasons, not the least of which was to hide the music industry’s deep involvement with drugs and crime.

The Beach Boys changed some of the lyrics and Dennis Wilson was credited with composing the song. That really ticked Charlie off.

Wish I had a copy of Joan Didion’s “The White Album” to quote from — but I don’t. But in it Didion says something to the effect of — The 60’s ended August 8, 1969. We awoke the morning after Tate-La Bianca murders in shock and disgust at what the sex and drugs, free love, peace movement of the 60’s had brought us to.

Then we lived in terror for 4 or 5 days until the butcherers were found. It was scary — everyone in L.A was on edge.
