August 24, 2017 (SPUC) All too often, parents are pressured by doctors to undergo genetic screening, and even to abort their babies if it is thought they have a disability. Now a video where an actress hilariously relates how she resisted this pressure is going viral.
When actress Lynn Fergusson (most famous for voicing Mac in Chicken Run) became pregnant with her first child at the age of 37, she was surprised to find that her pregnancy was labeled "geriatric." However, she was even more surprised by the relentless pressure doctors put on her first to undergo an amniocentesis, and then to abort her baby. Her talk, published by storytelling website The Moth, is related with humor, and is a beautiful example of a mother determined to do the best for her son.
The pressure begins
From the beginning, Fergusson was determined not to have the amniocentesis, which carries a 1 percent risk of miscarriage. "Its not technically the babys fault that Im old, you know," she said. "So Im not gonna take a risk. Not unless theres a good reason."(snip)
But the doctors continued to push, first because they suspected Down's syndrome, and then, terrifyingly, Edwards' syndrome, a condition where most babies die in the womb, or shortly after birth. Her response was amazing:
"You know, we had so many scans," said Ferguson. "I had seen my son. Id seen his heart. Id seen the inside of his eyes. (snip) He was my son and he needed me. He depended on me to make the right decision. So I said, No.'"

I was 38 when my perfect child was born. She’s a Junior in college now. Life is short
Do I really NEED TO write in an exception for every special case?
Same.
Gosh who would have thought a comment on a womans hair cut would be controversial!
You ‘gals’ are too touchy.
But I have seen it way too often. A man married a beautiufl long haired slim beauty and then she gets fat and cuts her hair off, and he begine to wonder when he married a short-fat guy.
YOU KNOW HOW SUPERFICIAL WE ARE!!!! And then you act surprised when we complain about short hair...? Especially when you girls do it without talking to your husband first? As if his opinion did not matter? As if you donre care how you look for him any more?
I am 60 now. I can easily think of half adozen marriages I watched die that started when the wife cut their hair off because they’re “married now” and so no longer need long attractive hair... or ... what?
Yes, I know its so easy to take care of. And pleasing your husband is not important anymore because “you.re married now”
She calls it like she sees it!
Now I feel even better about my haircut, knowing that it upsets some people. This is even more fun than upsetting people by having ten children!
Wow, imagine the pressure Sarah would have had! She was, what...95?
90, I believe.
You're a pip!
I love my wife’s pixie cut. She’s so cute.
How talented she is.
She’s 48 in that clip. It’s 11 years after the birth of her son who is 11 now.
My best friend did the test and lost her baby.
There are many flattering styles for all types of faces. My hairdresser has a 20’s ‘do right now. She looks just like Miss Phryne Fisher in the television mystery series.
Thank you. I value your opinion highly!
I suppose it's wicked of me, but I'm just tickled at the thought that I could be walking through Walmart one day, and some total stranger would have a stroke because of my spiky gray hairdo.
I hope he's not a cashier ... that would inconvenience a number of people!
My wife will be 41 when our next (and hopefully LAST) baby is born.
She’s a secret Duggar, I just know it. She needs to stop!
It’s called Breakup Hair, and its a thing!
I’ve seen it many times, women can’t understand the concept.
If you want a divorce, stop caring on making yourself attractive for your husband.
And girls, I know that the fat, drunk, tv-watching, lazy lout was not who YOU thought you married either, so I am not saying guys are all innocent.
I like the spiky hairstyles on gray. Depending on the person of course, it looks great!
So, did you motor down to see the Totality? I went down the SC coast and caught the spectacle there.
No, it was the first week of school, and we were in a total tizzy. The three at community college got to see the 90% occlusion here: the school handed out glasses. I took a peek between driving shifts.
A FRiend going from Maryland to SC stopped by on the Sunday afternoon, which was nice. I was astounded at how much older we’d both grown in the dozen years since I last saw him!
