Two women who attended Dragon Con in Atlanta are recovering from head injuries after they were hit by chairs thrown from a hotel balcony Sunday morning.
Two chairs were tossed from the 10th floor of Marriott Marquis hotel in downtown Atlanta about 1:40 a.m., Atlanta police spokesman Sgt. John Chafee told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. That floor had a terrace area from which chairs could have been thrown so police said they do not believe the chairs came from a guests room, Officer carlos Campos said.

McDaniel thinks her Loki costume from the Avengers movies helped lessen the blow from the chair.
"I really think that saved my life," she said.
...
Jamie Temple-Thompson Amador, who was dressed as Jessica Rabbit from the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit, was rushed to Wellstar Atlanta Medical Hospital, friend Jennifer Matteson told The AJC.
...
All in all, Matteson said their experience was still positive from the phenomenal hotel hospitality to the community.
The love and support from the Dragon Con family is heart warming to say the least, Matteson said. We can't wait to return for an even better experience, and reconnect with our new Atlanta family!
But Lee Satterfield had a different impression. He watched the commotion afterward and said hes feared incidents like this because he believes Dragon Con is unorganized.
No one there knows what they're doing, he said.

An official police investigation is ongoing and anyone with video or information should contact the Atlanta Police Department.

They also do or did DragonCon TV. Some of their stuff was really funny.
The DC channel is probably on youtube.
Or maybe Willy Shatner.
Wow, busy place. That being the case, the chair-throwers might not have been DragonCon attendees.
(I’m bringing this up because of the comment in the article from someone who said this was due to the organizers of DragonCon.)
That is understandable, and children will be rambunctious. I am not someone for whom everything has to be perfect and orderly.
And...sometimes the wind blows things around.
But this was an obvious destruction of something that was “nice”.
It did not benefit that person at all to heave the chair over the railing, but because of the terrain, it will sit there now for YEARS.
It’s really too bad.
I think filking predates DragonCon. They were doing it in the SCA long ago ... the 70s.
I myself have written a song about the Scout Law to the tune of “God is Bigger Than the Boogie-Man.” “A Scout is trustworthy, a Scout is loyal. A Scout is helpful and friendly, courteous and kind. He is obedient, and he is cheerful. A Scout is thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.”
We use the same melody in the Spanish Mass for “Alleluya, alleluia, alleluia, cantemos al Senor ... etc.” It’s apparently a genetically programmed chord progression.
I agree, it is too bad. I feel very negatively about that sort of thing, and I vociferously point out antisocial behavior to the Offspring, with strong emphasis on, “We don’t act like that!”
It’s the difference between being civilized and...not.
OK...With CAT 5 Hurricanes. Nork Nukes, Islamic terrorism, etc, it’s a very small point, but sociopathic behavior has to begin SOMEWHERE.
“Burning Man is newer (and more hip, I suppose) by comparison.”
Certainly more entertaining as this year they lived up to their name by having a dude run into the bonfire and fry himself to death. Hard to beat that!
I would guess it was someone drunk from the Alabama - FSU game.
I agree. My worldview is “Us vs. Entropy.” Every time I put on a set of matching jewelry to go to Walmart, I’m kicking entropy in the teeth. Same with picking up trash. Disordered behavior, like throwing chairs, is destructive. It’s destructive in a different way from doing something that is wrong but has a purpose, such as stealing.
Indeed. It is called “Broken Window Syndrome”. When one house has broken windows, and they are not repaired, soon the whole neighborhood has broken windows.
When I bought my mobile home a year ago, the one parked next to me was the epitome of “Trailer Trash”. Every replaced appliance, used medical equipment, bags of recycling that never got recycled, furniture, etc, began to pile up in the space between my house and theirs. Slowly but surely, I decorated my deck, planted flowers, and kept helping out on trash day until nearly all of it was gone. I also brought over tomatoes and cukes when they ripened and fresh herbs from my garden.
Now, their yard has a little gazebo, a garden, and (too many LOL) lawn ornaments.
I never complained, but just was an example.
Your contribution to order in the universe is praiseworthy. And it’s very nice of you to help your neighbors. We make a conscious effort to engage positively with our neighbors. “Good morning! Your little boy is so cute!” “Evening, Ma’am, how are you?”
Every little gesture positively builds up our neighborhood.
When one of the ladies next door came down with lung cancer, I posted a thread on FR for prayer.
She is now in TOTAL REMISSION.
So I hope I have been able to minister to my neighbors in more ways than one.
(((I think I remember your posting on the thread...it was a few months ago)))
Anyway...sorry to hijack the thread...it was originally about throwing chairs at a Dragon-Con in Atlanta! LOL!
But...perhaps it IS related.
“Burning Man”, with all its hedonism and stupidity, coincided perfectly with the heroism, courage, endurance, and compassion that was offered by the Cajun Navy, Rednecks, Swamp-People, and Good-Ol’-Boys of Texas and louisiana in the wake of hurricane Harvey.
Longer ago! Wiki says it was named based on a misspelling of 'folk' songs in the early 50s in SF Cons. Wouldn't surprise me if Forry Ackerman and friends were doing it under older names back into the 30s.
It is related. Everything is related. That’s just physics!
True dat.
I’m so pleased to learn of your neighbor’s improved health! It’s easier to slide down than to push up, but we have to push up.
