Vacuum cleaners sold in Europe are to be more cost- and energy-efficient, as a result of EU rules which outlaw new vacuum cleaners using more than 900 watts and emitting more than 80 decibels. Updated ecodesign requirements will lower appliances’ maximum power, annual energy consumption and noise levels.

The European Commission says it is is making use of latest state-of-the-art technologies to ensure that European consumers have the most energy efficient products available. They will also increase their minimum ability to pick up dust. […]

For Europe as a whole, more efficient vacuum cleaners will put it in a position to save up to 20 TWh of electricity per year by 2020. This is equivalent to the annual household electricity consumption of Belgium. It also means over 6 million tonnes of CO2 will not be emitted — about the annual emissions of eight medium-sized power plants.

Floor polishers, robot vacuums, mattress cleaners, and hand-held and battery operated vacuum cleaners are excluded from these regulations. …

First, they came for the vacuum cleaners.....

Are they going to sweep for any illegal vacuum cleaners henceforth?

J. Edgar might have some conflict of interest had this happened here, way back.

Tea kettles and hair dryers are also on the EU list for regulation.

Within twenty years, I expect nail clippers, water pistols, and handkerchiefs to be regulated by the EU.

I joke but actually I’m sure there are many in the good old U.S.A. that would like to do similar.

I remember hearing many years ago that they could make a quieter vacuum cleaner, but women like the feeling of power implied by the loud noise.

The EU is slowly turning in to a tolerable concentration camp where eventually everything will be strictly regulated. It is what Europeans do. There will be no Democracy because no matter who or what party you vote for nothing will change.

“The EU is slowly turning in to a tolerable concentration camp where eventually everything will be strictly regulated.”

“[The power of government] covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power… does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, until each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and hard-working animals, of which the government is the shepherd.’”

Great! More vacuous regulations from the European Commission.

That would make a great slogan;

“Welcome to the EU. The only thing here that doesn’t suck is our vacuums.”
