Exactly- pat per view killed boxing for the common man- and now mma too- I used to watch lidell, rampage, etc etc etc- all top tier fighters for free- now they are going to ppv- fighting went from being the everyman’s pastime sport to the rich person’s pastime sport-

Your analogy reminds me of the Larry Holmes/Randall Tex Cobb fight of ‘82. Cobb had been a powerful kickboxer. He was, as you describe McGregor, “a fighter”. He went 15 rounds in a unanimous loss. He got the crap beat out of him, but he didn't go down.

Yup, and Cobb's post-fight interview featured probably my favorite one-liner. Howard Cosell called the fight and was so outraged that the referee didn't stop it that he announced that he would never call another fight. Cobb was asked what he thought about Cosell's retirement in the post-fight, and he replied, "I'll go another 15 rounds with Holmes right now if he'll give up Monday Night Football."

I agree- I and friends were avid followers of the greats back then- because we could watch them and enjoyed the excitement of the fights live- I miss wide world of sports- and howard cosell lol- We’d be sitting a foot away from the Tv because we had to keep adjusting the antennae just to be able to watch the show lol- Watched the rumble in jungle- thriller in manilla- boom boom mancini (Saw him kill doo koo kim in the ring- I believe it was- horrible incident)- larry holmes- george forman- sugar ray- etc etc- got to see some truly great fights- being dirt poor- that was quite a treat to watch them on TV-

Yup- now all you can see on TV without paying for ppv are the second tier fighters- the ones that aen’t quite good enough to make it to the ppv- so i lost interest- I’ll lose interest in mma too when they fully jump on the ppv bandwagon
