Hurrah! Like a pet, it would be better to arrest them immediately after they do it; so they know why they’re being arrested.

Sheriff Fife absolves his force of any responsibility:
Durham police later said they monitored the protests to make sure they were safe, but did not interfere with the statue toppling because it happened on county property.

Durham Sheriff Says Protesters Who Tore Down Confederate Statue Will Face Felony Charges Good. Then everyone who stood by and watched can also be charged with Misprision of a Felony. (Allowing a felony to occur without reporting it to the authorities.)
Especially the police officers.

Reading this, I’m certain there must have been a HUGE backlash from the remaining sane residents of Durham against their chicken**** PC police “force.”
To: SHRiley
Lock them up. Then make them pay for damages.

Durham police later said they monitored the protests to make sure they were safe, but did not interfere with the statue toppling because it happened on county property. Because felony vandalism is okay if it occurs on County property? Aren't all the roads and public spaces in the County, "County Property"?
They didn't interfere because they just didn't give a sh*t.

I don’t think standing idly by and watching a rampage mob of thugs destroy public property is really encouraging safety in the community. If anything, it is encouraging lawlessness by aggressive, well funded mobs whose goal is to terrorize anyone and everyone that they disagree with.

Nah, as long as they’re arrested, charged, and convicted. If police had interfered during the “removal” the media would run with fascist cops oppressing poor victims who just oppose racism. The media is the enemy, as much If not moreso than anyone else.
