When Americans think of Communism in Eastern Europe, they imagine travel restrictions, bleak landscapes of gray concrete, miserable men and women languishing in long lines to shop in empty markets and security services snooping on the private lives of citizens. While much of this was true, our collective stereotype of Communist life does not tell the whole story.
Some might remember that Eastern bloc women enjoyed many rights and privileges unknown in liberal democracies at the time, including major state investments in their education and training, their full incorporation into the labor force, generous maternity leave allowances and guaranteed free child care. But theres one advantage that has received little attention: Women under Communism enjoyed more sexual pleasure.
A comparative sociological study of East and West Germans conducted after reunification in 1990 found that Eastern women had twice as many orgasms as Western women. Researchers marveled at this disparity in reported sexual satisfaction, especially since East German women suffered from the notorious double burden of formal employment and housework. In contrast, postwar West German women had stayed home and enjoyed all the labor-saving devices produced by the roaring capitalist economy. But they had less sex, and less satisfying sex, than women who had to line up for toilet paper.

It could be the potato soup and bread that I feed her?
Communist women enjoyed a degree of self-sufficiency that few Western women could have imagined. Eastern bloc women did not need to marry, or have sex, for money. The socialist state met their basic needs and countries such as Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and East Germany committed extra resources to support single mothers, divorcées and widows. The state spoon-feeding you your basic needs is not self-sufficiency. “This is an essay in the series Red Century, about the history and legacy of Communism 100 years after the Russian Revolution.”
And then the article utterly fails to explain why women had better sex (supposedly) under socialism. It cites a study from 1961.
Gee, there's no way that a government that kept every every space program, military, and nuclear accident a state-secret would lie about this, would they? A country where being a sloppy alcoholic is the norm, 99% of them don't even know what a banana is, have only seen oranges and watermelons in magazines, and whose average lifespan was 51 (it's up to 55 now) is healthy as a horse and having all kinds of great sex, right? Sure, and I have a bridge to sell you.

Okay, ladies. No more fun for you. You need a job, housework and long lines at the grocery store. But don’t worry, your orgasms will be more frequent and stronger.
Nonsense, nonsense, nonsense! This young person who does not have a clue about what we all, not just women, have lost, especially the challenge as well as the beauty and the fun of the college years — if she could possibly think that life in any way was better behind the iron curtain than she knows nothing. Communism “liberated” young women to do such jobs as heavy construction, sewer work, etc., and then after working in such an exhausting job all day, she faced standing in line at the grocery store for hours (with its bare shelves) before she could go home to be wife and mother but that was okay, she could always get an abortion if it all was too much for her — even if she loved and wanted her unborn baby.
I remember seeing those she-males on TV. I was 11 years old and knew that they were roided up like a farm show bull.
I can remember, while taking a course in university on the Russian Revolution and the communist rule that followed, learning about how married people had to resort to speaking to each other under their bedsheets in very low whispers when it came to discussing their concerns and fears about what was going on at their workplaces and elsewhere in Russia during the Stalin years. This was done in order to avoid being heard by peeping toms and spies trying to listen in through neighbouring walls. I wonder what that did for peoples’ sex lives back then?
No joke. In the late 70s, I had 3 channels on the TV: NBC, CBS, and PBS. And I was living the life of Reilly compared to them. Victor Belenko, who flew his MiG-25 to Japan in 1976, said that a $1.50 breakfast in the worst part of St. Louis was far and above better than ANY meal he ever had in the USSR.
What else was there to do if you’re not waiting in line for toilet paper?
The point they are trying to make is that women have better sex when the Government is their Husband. As opposed to being “tethered” to an actual husband.
The irony here is that marriage is usually better for women than for men. This is especially obvious after both turn 30.
What kind of orgasms did she have in Ghana? I can’t believe such an article in a mainstream newspaper, as opposed to pornographic magazines or Cosmopolitan.
I ran that through my NYT to English translator, it came back as:
Their forced incorporation into The State's labor force.
This gives keen insight into why the left promotes every kind of sexual depravity. They would clamp down on every kind of freedom, but as long as one is sexually “liberated” no one will even notice that they have no freedom.
I would question the basic premise of this article, though.
The primary form of birth control for Soviet women was abortion, without anesthetic. Some women had as many as 25 abortions, although I would think that few would remain fertile beyond more than a handful of abortions, and that those having 25 abortions are outliers. I would think that the prospect of having to use abortion as the only means of birth control would put off many women from sex.
Okay. So when did they have time for sex?
Because it was the ONLY form of pleasure one could have in totalitarian thug regimes. But don’t expect commie thug sympathizers (the NY Times) to admit that. ...or even comprehend it.
Oh sure, they were all kinds of self-sufficient. By "self-sufficient", they mean that their women were making clothes from an old moldy tarp found out in the forest, feeding their kids acorns because the food rations were so thin, and walking a mile each way with a 5-gallon bucket to get water that smells like diesel fuel. Or how about taking an old toothbrush, gouging a slot in it, inserting a razor blade, and melting the plastic around it with a match because a kitchen knife is a luxury that only Politburo members can get? These people had to use prison-ingenuity just to survive a standard of living that your average resident of India would find appalling. There's all kinds of self-sufficiency going on, isn't Mother Russia grand?
