Can Free Republic be blocking all PIA nodes??

It's possible, but maybe Jim could chime in here. I have run into the complete block of PIA on a couple of other websites and usually get a popup saying something about SPAM from the IP as the reason.

I just tried connecting from several different PIA IPs and couldn't get FR to load.

I just tried and was able to connect to freerepublic from PIA nodes in Israel, Brazil, and Denmark, but not from any North American nodes. So maybe he’s not blocking PIA specifically, just some IP ranges that PIA uses.

I use Expressvpn. The ip addresses out of Chicago, NYC and LA are blocked. Indianapolis works so far.

Can Free Republic be blocking all PIA nodes?? That's a hellava lot of IPs to block!

Nah! IP range filtering is very easy. You just need 1 IP in the range, and you can look it up and block everything owned by that company.

For instance, PIA's us-east.privateinternetaccess.com address resolves to 13 different discrete addresses. If I pick just one (208.167.254.106), I can look up the network information from a site like network-tools.com, and I'll see that London Trust Media (PIA's parent company) owns the whole 208.167.254.64/26 network which is 208.167.254.64 - 208.167.254.127. That doesn't seem like much, but if attackers are using the VPN, you can block each of the ranges individually and cease any traffic coming through that provider.

Alternatively, they could be using GEO IP blocking which blocks entire country ranges. I, for instance, block everything from China, the Philippines, Taiwan, Russia, etc. I have no business with anyone in any of those countries, so I'm comfortable blocking everything from all of them.

Not so sure about all this VPN stuff, it was barely if at all loading for me over my Sprint hotspot.

It really sucks when you go out for dinner at a restraint, and you can’t read the Free Republic while eating. I don’t know how people can go out to eat and not have a tablet of some sort with them.

Have you tried the Chicago or LA ips? Mine are blocked. Out of Dallas is fine so far.

Why are you using a VPN to access FR? That seems totally unnecessary, why not access it directly?

A better question would be why are you NOT using VPN on the internet?

Me too. Started happening after the last DOS attack. I wonder if Jim Rob decided to just disallow PIA addresses. Most annoying.

FWIW, I use Private Internet Access (PIA) as a virtual private network (VPN).

I usually turn it on only to access those sites that give me a hard time without it (separate long boring story). However, I have accessed FR with PIA turned on in the past with no problem.

When I saw this post, I turned PIA on and tried to reload the page. No luck, says the site can’t be reached. With PIA turned off, no problem reaching FR. This is a new problem for me and, possibly, FR. Maybe this is related to the DDOS problems FR has had recently?

Opera VPN protects you when you’re using the Opera browser. It does not protect your email and your cloud access. That’s why I use PIA instead.
