Since yesterday freerepublic.com's server refuses a connection when I use VPN. Any other VPN users have this problem? All other websites are accessible to me.

By VPN do you mean your company’s VPN? If so it sounds like they have FR as a blocked site.

The VPN I use is to establish a secure channel into my work domain. I can bypass it and still do purely Internet stuff 9like right now). What happens if you bypass yours?

Nord VPN has no problem. A tad slower but that’s all.

Work Domains are a different story. My employer blocks all kind of crap.

True - which is why I bypass my VPN when I’m doing what I’m doing right now.

One other thing, if you are connecting through a server in another country, it get’s much more complicated. Sometimes I connect through of Germany, or some other country to watch some videos. That causes issues when connecting to web sites.

I’ve accessed FR via VPN a few times with no problems.

If your VPN provider was being used by the source of a DDOS against Free Republic, yes, you could be formally blocked on that same IP address.

I’m using PIA also. Sounds like a PIA problem then. Thanks for the reply.

I had the same problem. I’m using PIA.

Same here. I, too, use Private Internet Access. I chose this one over a previously used VPN, because PIA does not "leak" URL requests to my ISP. The data encryption is complete between my computer and PIA's nodes.

However, I have been unable to load a page from Free Republic for about a week now. Knowing that FR has been the object of DOS attacks for a while now, I just assumed that there was another attack - a particularly successful one! But, I saw no notice about this at FR's Facebook interface, nor the one at Yahoo Groups.

So, I began to suspect that the problem was peculiar to my own computer or something. First thing I decided to try is to disable the VPN. Bingo!

Why would using a VPN result in no page from FR loading? I haven't a clue. I'm way too non-techie to even hazard a guess. But, I'm going to follow this thread in case some other FR tech-pro can shed light on this problem.

It's not a PIA problem. I think the DOS attack on FR was probably done using a PIA IP and JimRob has now blocked PIA.

I'm okay with disabling my VPN for FR. I'll probably set up a script to disable/enable as an exception just for FR.

I'm not going to give up PIA as I've been happy with the bandwidth I get.

I’m not on a VPN but I gave up last night because the pages weren’t loading. We have really fast internet but this was the only site hard to load.

Because one of the blocked IP addresses from the DDOS fix, was yours.

I'm not going to give up PIA...

Nor will I.

However, I'm puzzled that Free Republic can know that I am using PIA. I usually connect with a PIA node in Texas - not from one overseas. And even then, when I test PIA's performance (such as using www.iplocation.net), I get a result for the IP for the PIA node I'm connecting with, as if I were that node with that node's IP.

Can Free Republic be blocking all PIA nodes?? That's a hellava lot of IPs to block!
