Since my G-G-Grandfather was an Abolitionist who left the South to move to the Free States (Iowa, in his case) and my G-G-Uncle was a Confederate Captain who fought at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and surrendered at Appomattox with General Lee, I can safely say that I got all that history from our family history book and the oral description from my father.
Really not in need of any lectures from people reading the NEA approved version of history.
And since another G-G-Uncle was one of the guys in the NC State legislature who voted for secession, we have his letters home detailing his reasons, which had almost nothing to do with saving slavery - he was anti-slavery as many Anabaptists in Western North Carolina were - but more about anger at the North for the threats and intimidation.
You can live in your noble crusade world all you want, but the whites in the North didn’t invade the South to Free the Negroes. In their minds it was to hold the Union together, because they genuinely feared ending up under European monarchial domination again if they did not.
On that point, I would agree with them. But it never needed to end up costing 700,000 white lives, and destroying the bonds between my family for 4 generations.
The North was losing the war and so the war was repackaged in 1863 as war to end slavery which went over like a fart in church. Race/draft riots ensued the Goons EO on slavery.

Holding the Union together was of course a major factor, but your attempt to minimize the equally important factor of abolishing slavery places you in a distinct minority—a minority which relies not a whit on anything having to do with NEA boogeymen.

If you consider that anthem insignificant, that's your affair, but it clearly conveys the idea that the war was being fought—at least in the minds of a segment of the Union citizenry—to end slavery, That cause WAS the "righteous cause" of the war. It apparently took a lot more than esoteric arguments about States' Rights to motivate the North.
