With the seventh season of HBO's Game of Thrones at its halfway point, Westeros is at war yet again. In the last two episodes (episodes 3 and 4), the forces aligned with Daenerys Targaryen and Cersei Lannister have met upon the fields (and seas) of battle at last. Things have not gone entirely according to plan for either side.
In fact things have gone so wrong, so fast that I thought it might be time to convene the Ars Technica Board of Fictional Military Historic Analysiswith its charter members, Jon Nichols and Steve Skaggs, two special operations professionals now in the private sectorin order to dive in on the biggest blunders and curious command decisions from both sides.

She used her dragon poorly in the latest battle. Torch the front line of the enemy ALONG the line, not perpendicular. Save the food stores. Anyhoo...
And the lanisters should have used the wagons as a barricade to keep the mounted horsemen from brakeing through their lines. It would have helped until they got torched. But they were going to get torched anyway.
Danny should have just attacked King’s Landing like she wanted. Anyway, it’s not like the civilians in King’s landing are the greatest people ever. Euron pointed out that they’re willing and able to throw tomatos at whoever is being chained and dragged around at the time, including their ruler from the day before. They’re basically the Monty Python peasants. Just nuke the fortress and the peasants will just get over any accidental carnage.
yep hell she should be using the dragons to fly reconnaissance that way she’s not committing her ground troops in massive blunders like she’s done .... she be able to see any troop movements with impunity and pick off targets of opportunity
Final scene sort of reminds me of scenes of the road back to Iraq from Kuwait during Desert Storm.
I have pretty much joined team (Night King) Because the people in Westeros are so stupid, selfish, greedy, shifty and petulant that they deserve to be wiped out.
Should have coordinated at least 2 of her dragons in a SEAD-mission to flush out that Scorpion (SAM) System. Seriously, the only hope for a kill-shot was to lure the dragon down to the ground and hit it in the head when it was relatively stationary. Relying on the Mark-1 eyeball and physically training that clumsy weapon was bound to fail.
Dani and Jamie need to organize their forces to funnel the white walkers after Cerci. Cerci will be defenseless without the dragon glass. Jamie is being forced to choose between cerci his lover and Tyrion his brother.
And you know what they say, Bros before Hoes.
Also, does anyone else see an allegory of Game of Thrones to the current geopolitical climate? Or is that posted on a different thread?
