Your cat is killing the Earth — but you can prevent it [barf]

To honor cats on the International Cat Day, DW encourages their human companions to protect the planet we all share. From carbon pawprint to waste to wildlife, it is in our hands to take up better practices.

Your cat’s sweet purring and loving, contented looks won’t change the fact that it’s guilty for the planet’s suffering — just like we are.

A recent study confirms that pets’ meat-based diet has a fatal impact on the climate, due mainly to high carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, our loyal friends are big resource consumers and waste creators. The situation is particularly worrisome considering the paradigm shift in the human-pet relationship in emerging economies such as China. Moreover, cats that go or live outdoors eat urban wildlife, particularly newborn chicks. Environmental groups are calling for an to end this vicious cycle. So is it possible to love and respect your pet, while still protecting the planet? […]

“Cats tend to kill weak and sickly birds, so it is not clear whether cat predation replaces other forms of death, or is in addition to natural death,” Sarah Elliott, central veterinary officer with Cats Protection, said in a press release. […]

Reducing the CO2 emissions is more of a challenge. A vegetarian diet is not an option for a cat. Owners can, however, switch to organic feed —which supports biodiversity and reduces pollution since it avoids pesticides —and more environmentally friendly packaging. They can also avoid using hot water for cleaning the litterbox —and above all, buy compostable cat litter. …

Might give the poor kitties indigestion, but if not, it would be the most useful thing the lib ever did with his “life”.

I used to think that the Global Warming Zealots just wanted a world without people. Now carnivorous animals are part of the problem too.

Humans the world over are eating meat and drinking milk — some of us a little less, some of us a lot more, than years past. Farmers are bringing more and more cows into the world to meet demand, and with them escapes more methane into the atmosphere.

the fact that it’s guilty for the planet’s suffering

The planet is suffering? How does she know? does the magma speak to her? Maybe the owl calls her name and then tells her stuff, although I've found owls to e rather poor conversationalists never being able to get beyond asking who they're talking to. Maybe she hears it in the wind when she's taken the proper medication.

Not too much in terms of bad-condition meat can give a cat indigestion. Their stomach acid pH is usually between 1 and 2, so cats’ gastric juices usually kill off the vast majority of pathogens, and they can even digest a certain amount of bone.

I dated a girl back in the 80’s that could actually order her cat around. If she told that cat to sit, it would stop and sit. Darndest thing I ever saw.

There are only 2 good uses for cats.

1. Keep mice and rats out of the barn

2. Target practice when they get over populated.

It's a common condition caused by the fact that she's not getting enough meat in her diet ...

I spooked a couple out of the tree in my courtyard in June.

They were safe. They made it to my table and momma came in and fed them there. Took them one day to get to the roof and out.

Any other place and they would be lunch. I’m glad they made it.

Isn’t a “harf” alert more appropriate in this case? That’s the hairball sound.

Who knew there were urban free range baby chickens?

Mine keeps the critter population down. They eat bugs, snakes, squirrels, etc. and I thank them for it.
