I'm in Oklahoma and we have casinos everywhere. It seems.
But a tribe has surreptitiously acquired a small piece of property in my particular town and built facilities for a restaurant. Now it's been revealed they intend to start a casino, and our councilmen say there's nothing they can do.
Even though gambling is illegal in my town, these people are protected by the federal government to open up one of their filthy, prefabricated, typically "native American" dumps? They say they are, and they say as long as they comply with the feds, they can do whatever they want.
I'm going to contact my Congresscritters. Is there any precedent for shutting down a gambling establishment?
I never shot and Indian and am tired of giving these people special consideration for what my ancestors might, or might not have, done.
Is it true that Lieawatha Warren will be at the Groundbreaking Ceremony?
>>>another one of their myriad dumpy prefab typically indian architecture casinos
So you would be ok if this were a Trump Casino?
I am 100% native American. I was born in FL
Now that the kids are grown, my wife and I focus on cruises, Vegas trips and even Hawaii vacations that are actually all less money and more fun than when we used to take the kids to Orlando theme parks.
The seediness is everywhere I'm afraid. We were on the Outer Banks a few weeks ago and took a side trip to Virginia Beach. That place has really gone downhill and was quite skanky in areas. Unless you got the cash to stay at a nice gated resort, you have that environment to contend with in just about every tourist area.
Either these places are getting seedier or I'm just getting older and crankier about such things than I used to be!
The irony is that this "reparation" just like other reparations do nothing at all to make amends of the supposed wrong doings in the first place. Ghettos and Indian Reservations and their people will never climb out of their status (by design). A permanent underclass makes many very wealthy and powerful while sustaining the government taxation/welfare state.
“... mixed breeds such as yourself and my wife...”
So you refer to your wife and myself as you would refer to dogs??? Mixed breed...
They are considered sovereign nations, although they do have to comply with Federal Regulations on Reservation lands. On some reservations, tribal laws restrict alcohol and firearms, although each tribe's laws can be different.
For years, under Federal Law the Oneida Nation was allowed to sell brand name cigarettes, along with their own manufactured tobacco products to non-Indians without having to collect taxes on them. Andrew Cuomo and the NY State Legislature passed a law back in 2010 that would force them to pay tax on all brand name cigarettes. The Oneida Nation sued the State, and an agreement was eventually settled in 2013, whereby the Nation must collect tax on the sale of all tobacco products, name brand and their own products to non-Indians. They must tax at the rate of the county they are located in. Also, the Oneida will be required to adhere to minimum pricing standards and are required to use the tax revenue from cigarette sales on the same types of programs that the state and counties devote their tax revenues.
My parents gave up on Virginia Beach before I was born because of that so it goes back to the sixties at least, there’s a large military presence and the boys will have their fun off base, a seedy strip at a minimum springs up near any installation of any size.
I suspect you’ve discovered just how deceptive distances appear on a map out there, lol. VA Beach is not a short jaunt from OBX no matter how close it might appear. There is no as the crow flies with all the sounds, bays, rivers, state and national parks or nature preserves. Beautiful, rare place though, the OBX. How did you like it? I love the place, tend toward the less developed islands, Hatteras typically. Going up to Carova for the first time next week.
I do not use the term “native American”...Anyone born in America is “native American”...
I use the term American Indian....
Let’s see now, Indians refer to mixed breeds as “half-breed”, and you’ve got a problem?? Go see the Indians who made the label.
In my memory, it has been the white man who referred to interracial Indians as “mixed breed” or “half breed”...
It happened here in Arizona too... Indians bought some land within Glendale city limits... just a couple miles from Cardinals stadium... registered it with the feds as tribal land. First the city realized was when they applied for a building permit to build a new casino... been a fight for a couple years now, with politicians vowing to stop it, but the temporary building is up and open for business collecting money.
Your ancestors didn't shoot enough of 'em. < /sarc >
Then you have one hellofa inexperienced memory.
Besides, why do you hate dogs to much?
“white man “
That’s racist.
Seems Indians, too, can’t live without “white man’s” money.
Excuse me...”Caucasian man”
I love children, old dogs, and watermelon wine....
I always heard they were run by The Mob. The Indians were the facade.
Donald Trump once said about Connecticut’s tribes - ‘They don’t look Indian to me.’ Donald wanted to put a casino in CT, but the Indians had rights to veto....
