Former Phillies catcher Darren 'Dutch' Daulton dies at 55

Darren “Dutch” Daulton, the charismatic catcher and master of Macho Row, whose talent for controlling both a pitching staff and a clubhouse helped the 1993 Phillies win an improbable National League pennant, died Sunday at age 55 after a four-year battle with brain cancer.

A three-time all-star, Mr. Daulton played 14 seasons for the Phillies organization, which drafted him in 1980. But he will be recalled longest and most fondly in Philadelphia for his role as the cleanup hitter and locker-room leader of the 1993 Phils.

That wild and wildly popular team, with him supplying much of its power on and off the field, attracted a then-franchise record 3.1 million fans --SNIP-- In his 2001 Historical Baseball Abstract, statistical guru Bill James ranked Mr. Daulton as the 25th best catcher in baseball history.

Terrible shame.

Interestingly, five (at least) Phillies from the era when they played in Veteran's Stadium have contracted and/or died of brain cancer. Tug McGraw, John Vocovich, Ken Brett, Johnny Oats, and now "Dutch" Daulton all passed of brain cancer since 2000. In the same period, four others in all the rest of major league baseball did. The Eagles also played in the same stadium and dont' have such a problem which indicates it's just coincidence but it's odd to say the least.

Interesting thought. Don't forget the Phillies played about 80 home games a year and the eagles probably about 8-10. If there were any carcinogens in the Vet it is possible the Phillies had about 10x more exposure.
(The Eagles had more practices so I am not sure how that figures into the equation.)

And he was on the Marlins team that won the World Series in 1997. RIP Darren Daulton.

There’s some suspicion that the old Giants Stadium, built on a landfill, contributed to the cancer deaths of a few football players (Jason Tuggle, Doug Kotar, to name just two)

Simpler explanation: they all took massive steroids and amphetamines.

From Daulton himself: "There's probably no one in any sport who took more drugs than I did"

1993 Phils were our team. On any given night we would go down to the Vet,tailgate at the Holiday Inn,buy a cheap ticket to the 700 Level and watch good baseball drinking overpriced beer.

It was common to see Daulton,Dykstra and others bar hop on the Mainline. That team (and baseball in general) after the strike was an end of an era.

Doesn’t explain why the rest of MLB combined has fewer deaths than this one team. Presumably their athletes took all the same drugs.
