RIP, Mr. Farnum. He was totally fabulous in the role of Siegfried. He WAS Siegfried. I watched the episodes on Youtube, totally entranced.

I liked him as Sir John Middleton in Sense & Sensibility, and Mr. Brooke in Middlemarch.

More than just an actor
While playing Henry V, Hardy developed an interest in medieval warfare, and in 1963 he wrote and presented an acclaimed television documentary on the subject of the Battle of Agincourt.[16] He also wrote two books on the subject of the longbow, Longbow: A Social and Military History,[17] and The Great Warbow; From Hastings to the Mary Rose with Matthew Strickland.[18] He was one of the experts consulted by the archaeologist responsible for raising the Mary Rose. He was Master of the Worshipful Company of Bowyers of the City of London from 1988 to 1990. In 1996 he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.[19]

Yes it was. Every single actor was totally believable in the part. All without CGI or other stuff. I loved that series, it was right up my alley. And who could not resist the gorgeous countryside of Yorkshire in the shots? Or seeing beautiful livestock?

A fine, versatile British actor who will be fondly remembered for his many roles on screen and stage.

Rest in peace, Robert.

A life well lived

His children Emma, Justine and Paul said in the statement: "Dad is also remembered as a meticulous linguist, a fine artist, a lover of music and a champion of literature, as well a highly respected historian, and a leading specialist on the longbow.
"He was an essential part of the team that raised the great Tudor warship The Mary Rose."

Back in 1983 ( 2 years before moving to Japan ) my friend and I spent a 9 days in North Yorkshire and its environs . Went to Askrigg where the “ Skeldale House “ you see in the show is . Took pics in fron , of course . While there got a signed copy of the real James Herriot’s book “ James Herriot’s Yorkshire which I highly recommend for all fans of the series . Not sure if it is still in print , though .

To Tristan when Mrs. Hall was away and Tristan did the cooking : “ Bangers for breakfast , bangers for lunch , bangers for dinner . I’m even beginning to dream about bangers . Battalions of bangers marching inexorably toward me with YOU at their head ! I shall never look another banger straight in the eye again . Until Mrs. Hall returns , I’m eating out ! “

Very sad, but after all, 91. He was also a world-renowned expert on the English longbow.

A committed Ricardian, the foremost expert on the long bow, a great actor with a very long career and charming as hell. Some people have just got it all! RIP, Robert Hardy!

The real Siegfried was so incensed with his portrait in the book that James Herriott was forced to tone him down and then get rid of him entirely in the sequels. One reason I suspect that Robert Hardy played him as a gentle squire rather than the eccentric nutcase he really was. But who cares? He was wonderful, anyway.

I remember a much younger actor in the part of the veterinarian—and an antique car—and had abandoned TV altogether—since.

Was I following an older series?
