Desert tortoises pace back and forth and can overheat by roadside fencing meant to help them, according to a study published in the journal Biological Conservation by the University of California, Davis, and the University of Georgia.
Many of these laws are actually causing more harm than good yet they continue to push these without checking back to make sure they are not creating a worse situation, so this particular study is huge in the Southwest.
They are killing more than they are saving with this and many other laws meant to protect them. They don't actually give a damn about Tortoises, it's all about money, control and Federal land grabs. And here again is yet another example.
I guess we can’t Build That Wall now.
Illegals come into the US through the deserts where the desert tortoise lives. In fact, on their way here they eat any tortoise they find. Many empty shells have been found.
A border fence will save what tortoise are left.
I didn’t consider that aspect before I posted this... Probably should have. Just trying to expose the failed science behind their actions.
The paragraph near then end that refers to renewable energy destroys all credibility in the article.
That would make a good article to share.
The Desert Tortoise is a very tough animal, but even they can fall victim to busybody interference from environmentalists.
Leave them alone, they had already figured out how to cross, most the time cross safely.
At first, I thought the headline had to do with Mitch McConnell; aka Yertle the Turtle, but there was no mention of his counterpart, The Hare, aka Paul Ryan. So no, it couldn’t have been that.
I think what is important in this is the fact that after spending tens of billions of dollars on these laws to “save” these species much of what they do is based on bad science and causing more harm than good. And there are many more examples of these across the country, they don’t look far enough ahead to what the cause and effect outcome will truly be before they force these laws on us.
If I remember right there were more tortoises on the Bundy property than neighboring parts of the high desert because desert tortoises love them some cow puckies.
Renewable energy kills tortoises.
That is a fact. I grew up in the East Mojave and know this species very well. I witnessed this whole action from the very first studies up to present.
There is a recent similar environmental action I have been very critical of concerning a couple other species. They built a new bridge recently across the Colorado River at Hoover Dam. They also built a special bridge for the sheep and other species to cross this natural barrier which has been there for millions of years.
Now the DNA of the North and South sides are going to be allowed to mix for the first time in thousands of years. I’m not so sure this was wise. They probably should have left this one alone and let them remain separated as they have been for a very long time.
Even the Navajo and Hopi have ancient stories about the different origins of the squirrels on the North side and the South side. There might have been something to heed in this concept.
Silly Conservatives...
Haven’t you learned by now that killing endangered species are cool, as long as the right Democrats and their Billionaire backers are making money from it?
This is an interesting article. Davis Unoiversity is about 10 miles east of Sacramento, California, and is an agricultural college that delves into different things. A long way from the desert.
They used the facilities at the University Of California, Burkley facilities at Imperial Valley, California as their study location. It is in the middle of a agricultural area and, again, a long way from the desert.
Why do I get the feeling that they are pulling the killing the caribou routine like they lied about for the Alaskan oil projects? The tortoise has lived in the desert for centuries and has learned to find food and water, not much needed, without being stopped by anything in its way like rocks, plants, mouintains, or washes and has not been stupid enough to walk next to a fence until it dies. So, what’s the fence got to do with it.
I also get the idea that when it comes to staying alive on the desert, these animals are better prepared, more experienced as they outlive us, and possibly more intelligent than the overpaid grad student that wrote the study. I wonder if the tortoise is trangender homosexual. Then building the fence can become a hate crime.

And it never was about the Tortoises... The hypocritical BLM killed hundreds themselves without cause before the “excuse” used to shut down Bundy was used.

As long as they are mentioning heat, and thus the Global Warming lie — Atlanta GA is in the 80’s for the next 10 days. That’s unheard of. When I got here in 2002, it was 90’s and 100’s in August.
We are experiencing Global COOLING.
This seems to be the fate of the Whistling Turtle as well.
They did this study out in the field in the East Mojave. There was recently an almost continuous 136 mile long fence put up along both sides of I-40 from Barstow to Needles. They did leave the main larger washes open for species travel under the freeway.
But these are quite far apart most of the length of this new barrier. Sometimes 5 miles or more apart. The Tortoise is just not quite smart enough to know that there IS a way to get across at each end.
They are adaptable but they are not quite this intelligent. And life or death for this species depends on extreme conservation of their energy and internally stored water source. Being forced to go out of their way like this costs them quite a bit and is now killing them in the summer.
It didn’t work for the better as planned and now it is causing more harm than good.
.... but enough about Senator McConnell.
