The United States is warning travelers to Mexico about tainted or counterfeit alcohol following the death of a Wisconsin woman.

...

The death of Abbey Connor, 20, is just one of many incidents of travelers becoming sick after drinking alcohol at Mexican resorts, the paper reported.

Connor, 20, was pulled from a pool at an Iberostar resort near Playa del Carmen in January, according to the paper.

After the story, the paper received numerous reports from others who said they got sick and experienced blackouts at resorts in Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

The Cancun/Riviera Maya area used to be a pretty nice place and the all-inclusive resorts were fun and tourist-friendly.

Now that the cartels have taken over we can see the results of their influence and control.

Interesting that many US appliance manufacturers are moving to ol’ Mexico. I'd be very wary of anything Hecho en Mexico.

Bought a GE water heater at Home Depot which crapped-out on me in 3 1/2 yrs. Started researching it and learned that GE water heaters are actually made by Rheem. Usually a good thing as they are a decent manufacturer.

HOWEVER....while most Rheem/GE water heaters are made at Rheem's plant in Alabama, they contracted out production of GE water heaters for Home Depot to a Mexican manufacturer in order to meet the Home Depot price.

Learned my lesson. Never buying a critical appliance from any Big Box retailer again. Home Depot did make good on the warranty, but that took 4 days of back-and-forth with Atlanta during which we were all taking cold showers.

Damn! I hate it when American manufacturers wave the American flag in one hand and pick your pocket with the other.

Sadly. I won’t buy American appliances anymore for this reason.

New GE, Maytag, Whirlpool appliances... are all junk, expensive junk... and the appliances crap out after just a couple of years. And they are now putting network connectivity in them? Just something else to break down.

Our old Maytag clothes washer is 23 years old and still going strong. A bit noisier and making some strange grinding noises, though. :) Our plan is repair the old beast for as long as possible.

Anyway, we purchased a Bosh dishwasher and are counting the years. So far, 8 years and no problems. Crossing my fingers, toes and eyes.

I don’t know where Frigidaire ovens are made, but I bought one in 2002 that was a convection oven, self-cleaning, glass top with 4 burners, one is dual, and an extra warmer burner. It is still going strong and the only thing that has ever been replaced is the appliance bulb. Best oven I have ever owned. And believe me it has had a work out. Especially every year at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Because my crew expects me to cook the world and each person who comes to my house gets there favorite dessert, and everyone has a different one.

This year will be different by the way. The oven is holding up perfectly. I however, am over it.

Ah, I bet you are a good cook too. :)

The best way to show family and friends that you love them is to cook a good meal for them.

Wow. 15 years! Hang on to your stove for as long as possible. The cut off point for poor quality in appliances was around 2002 maybe a little after — 2005? I bet that you’ll get at least 10 more years out of it.

Plus, you’ll avoid the frustration of it breaking down when you need it for one of those important holiday meals.

Here’s a handy Spanish phrase for any adventurers heading down old Mexico way: “Yo tengo diarrea explosiva. Ayuda me, por favor.”

I’m still using the oven that was in this house when I bought it in 1992. It’s a GE and has no ups and extras, it’s just a great oven.

My son is getting married in Key West next May. Do any Freepers have suggestions about restaurants and hotels?

You might want to start a separate bloggers/personal thread for your question. I’m not familiar with Key West other than knowing it is the real Margaritaville.
