Robots that mimic ivy vines can grow thousands of times their original lengths at speeds faster than the average person can run, a new study finds.
The new soft, flexible robots could one day be used in tight situations, such as to slither through rubble or snake inside the human body...
The newly developed robot is made of soft, flexible polyethylene, the most common plastic in the world. It grows from its tip via internal air pressure, which pushes plastic tubing stored at its base up through the core of its body. The robot is initially about 11 inches (28 cm) long, but can rapidly reach a maximum length of about 236 feet (72 meters), according to the researchers.
"The body doesn't move as the tip extends," Hawkes told Live Science. "That is, you could hold the body of the robot tightly in your hands, and the tip would keep growing."

It’s morning! Does anyone care?
I’m dressed but I still have to comb my head out and then go have a dose of steroid before I do anything else.
Then I’ll sort the clothes and will have a little time to geek with my FRiends.
Morning, it is. Jake woke me up. I had, at some point, opened the bedroom door so he could get in and out, but I guess DP closed it again. Sigh.
I’ll be leaving at 7:15 EDT to pick up the girls from the dogs and take the girls to school. Tom will take them back after school. It is rumored that the dog owners will get home tonight, but I’m not holding my breath.
I didn’t want to be up before 0300, but I was.
After the laundry is done, the day is mine, so maybe I’ll be able to figure out that missing link in the genealogy. The numbering isn’t standard.
My late SiL set it up on an alpha-numeric system so one family can be traced as far as there are records before it ends, and then another name gets the same treatment with a different set of values. Easier to trace and enter, but the genealogy programs for the computer are a lot “simpler,” and more frustrating.
That was SOOO on my mind this morning! LOL!

My older brother returns to Houston today to survey his home. Here’s hoping he was in a dry area.
And that’s exactly what I did. Running will have to re-start another day.
Second morning. Back from the transport of the girls. Traffic was miserable. If I have to do this tomorrow, I’m leaving at 6:45 instead of 7:15.
As I was going from the highway over to CP, I slowed down to let someone turn left from the stop sign at an intersection. Elen said, “Aren’t you going to let Tom turn, too?” and sure enough, there he was in the next car, looking daggers at me. Gave me a good laugh, which I needed.
Hahahaha! Tom needed a lesson on Right-of-Way for Mothers, I guess!
I’m back from the laundromat. Just as I was leaving, my back began to spasm, even though I had taken a pain pill when I first got up. That does not bode well for the rest of the day. :o|
My brother and his family all lived in Houston, and when hurricanes came, I would call to see if they were OK. He said they “lived on a hill,” and that they were relatively untouched.
He and his wife live in CO now, as three of their children are there. The girls, however, are still in the Houston area, so I will call my bro this morning to see if the girls are safe.

My son posted all the swag he got at the Eureka Springs rally. There’s a white T-shirt on there that I’m going to try and talk him out of! LOL!
