Robots that mimic ivy vines can grow thousands of times their original lengths at speeds faster than the average person can run, a new study finds.
The new soft, flexible robots could one day be used in tight situations, such as to slither through rubble or snake inside the human body...
The newly developed robot is made of soft, flexible polyethylene, the most common plastic in the world. It grows from its tip via internal air pressure, which pushes plastic tubing stored at its base up through the core of its body. The robot is initially about 11 inches (28 cm) long, but can rapidly reach a maximum length of about 236 feet (72 meters), according to the researchers.
"The body doesn't move as the tip extends," Hawkes told Live Science. "That is, you could hold the body of the robot tightly in your hands, and the tip would keep growing."

*gasp*
So beautiful!
And now, chillrun of the new Undead Thread, I’m taking my queasy body to bed.
I’m hoping tomorrow is a better day for me, because I really hate the nausea.
And I’ll revise and revamp the letter to the manager and his pet beard. All y’all have a good night!
I think it could use some down-tilted eyebrows and some cat whiskers.
Well, actually what they said was:
_____
...FLASH FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT EDT TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY MORNING...
The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a Flash Flood Watch for portions of northeast New Jersey and southeast New York, including the following areas: In southeast New York, Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn), New York (Manhattan), Northern Queens, Orange, Richmond (Staten Island), Rockland, Southern Nassau, Southern Queens, Southern Westchester, and Southwestern Suffolk from midnight EDT tonight through Monday morning.
An area of low pressure will develop along a frontal boundary to our south and pass just south and east of Long Island. Rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches an hour are possible and may lead to flash flooding the New York City metro and surrounding areas. Flash flooding will also be possible for portions of the Lower Hudson Valley.

For you that means the effluent from the homeless, bums, illegals, and other upstanding citizens that Mayor Warren Wilhelm Jr. has decreed are entitled to use streets, sidewalks, doorways, and any other location of their liking as a latrine will all get washed into the storm drains. And ultimately to the Hudson or East Rivers temporarly improving the aroma of the area.
For me it means that my easement for the county ditch will again collect standing water..
Fluffy hopes you can swim.
We just got it here, about 3-1/2". I have to go back out in it to get Drama Queen and Sheldon from youth group.
For the most part we’re not in trouble until the sump pump is running continuously. And then the power goes out...
Our power dimmed a little, but didn’t go out. The woods across the street, where my squirrel Marcia lives, are flooded again. The frogs are thrilled: it’s really loud over there.
That looks like a little boy with a dirty face! Squee!!!
That IS a cute tail! Whoa! I’d take that little floof in a heartbeat!
The poster says she anticipated the kitten’s being adopted, but then she got hooked!
I can see that happening.
The clothes have been sorted, the bed has been stripped, the garbage has been taken out, and I’ve had my steroid.
The drains were making funny noises, yesterday, and I’m thinking the water had been shut off at the main close by, because this morning everything is back to normal. I don’t know how these people think they will sell this place until the plumbing is working properly.
I really wanted to sleep another hour, but the laundry called to me: “Get up, you slug-a-bed!”
And here is I.
I have made an appointment at 8:00 a.m. to essay a driving event with Drama Queen. It will go slowly, around the block, so I’m sure I’ll be back, even if I have to walk ...
I plan to go to Dress Barn later to see if there’s anything I want with my $10-off coupon they sent for my birthday. Also, I’ll take some music pages to Asuncion’s; it’s in the same direction.
I’m going to email you the draft of the letter for editorial purposes, if you don’t mind. My brain isn’t up to par.
I should go to Walmart, but not until I’m done at the laundromat.
I sent it, and it didn’t want to go, so I hope it didn’t go more than once!
I need to get some water and head on out.
Text me if there are major changes to be made, please!
:o]
OK, I found it, but it’s gonna wreak havoc with my commute.
If anyone sees anything slithering around with eyes at both ends, please don’t kill it. It’s a failed experiment but I still care for it.
For us it means big puddles at the street corners where the trash has flowed to block the grates that normally carry such puddles into the drainage system.
Not good for nice shoes, but better than when the snow melt does the same thing.
We got mostly nothing, but it’s a little cooler today than it was all last week.
