It makes no sense.

Further how is discussing matters important to Moscow with the ambassador somehow wrong or a crime?

What else are ambassadors going to talk about other than issues important to their country?

The media try to make normal activity seen as criminal.

Especially since Sessions was a U.S. Senator at the time and was clear that he had plenty of meetings with foreign representatives in that capacity.

Yep. "Russia, if you're listening, I hope you can find the 33,000 emails that are missing" is labeled a serious request to perpetrate a federal crime.
