A lawyer for the family of an Australian woman shot dead by police in Minneapolis says suggestions officers feared an ambush were "ludicrous".
Robert Bennett said Justine Damond was in her pyjamas when she approached them and "was not a threat to anyone".
Ms Damond was shot after approaching two officers in their car on Saturday after reporting a suspected rape.
Mr Bennett has acted in similar cases, including the high-profile police shooting of Philando Castile in 2016.
Fred Bruno, the lawyer for Matthew Harrity, whose partner killed Ms Damond, 40, had said: "It is reasonable to assume an officer in that situation would be concerned about a possible ambush."
But Mr Bennett told CBS News: "I think that's ludicrous. It's disinformation. It doesn't have any basis in fact."
He added: "She obviously wasn't armed, was not a threat to anyone, and nor could she have reasonably been perceived to be."
Officer Mohamed Noor, who shot Ms Damond in the abdomen in an upmarket neighbourhood of the city, has refused to be interviewed by investigators, as is his legal right.

If the town chose a Somali applicant over an otherwise better qualified applicant, then they chose a political solution over public safety, and that action likely led to the death of this citizen.
Ludicrous, but could be true?
The guy should have been under arrest for murder befor sunrise.
This is normal stuff where you live?
The mayor and police chief too busy to comment?
Interesting that none of the headlines in this particular police-involved shooting mention the race of the cop or the citizen that was shot. Perhaps I missed it, but I haven’t seen any “black cop shoots unarmed white woman” headlines from any of the mainstream media outlets. Doesn’t fit the narrative.
Nonsense.
The only person going down in this situation is Justine Damond. Everyone else is gonna keep on truckin'.
Chances are excellent that Officer Noor will be back on the job within six months, maybe less.
Either that, or he'll be given a large pension and disappear.
"All The News That Fits Our Views."
Yes, it could. Which is why this officer will be acquitted, just like the last MPD shooter was.
And after watching the video, that lawyer Bennett struck me as being the worst kind of plaintiff lawyer. A real snake.
But the city should pay big bucks to the family no matter what.
The body cameras and the dash camera too.
Where did you see that bit of info?
Initial lies were that she was in a very dicey neighborhood and what was she doing there if she was so was innocent?
This is akin, in my mind, to Kate Steinle.
So the other cop is covering for his partner. Great.

Not that way at all. The other cop was “stunned” at Noor killing this woman. There’s been a lot reported on what the partner has done after this murder. It’s in best interests to tell the truth.
As long as "the truth" supports the multi-culti agenda, yeah, the truth is fine.
Any reason why a Somali (insert expletive) officer would not wish that activity officially reported?
“Very bad shoot.”
Seems like it.
Of course just like Black Lives Matter, lot of people here know everything for certain without any investigation.
He added: “She obviously wasn’t armed, was not a threat to anyone, and nor could she have reasonably been perceived to be.”
...
It’s obvious in hindsight, but probably not in the actual conditions. But he’s doing what a lawyer does.
“Those ambushes happen all the time.”
But cops don’t fire across the car, past their partner, at innocent women in PJs all the time...
[Initial lies were that she was in a very dicey neighborhood and what was she doing there if she was so was innocent?]
Being that we are dealing with a protected class as a component of this matter, look for this woman’s character and actions to be impugned at every turn in an attempt to blame her for her own murder.
The left must have it this way to keep the proper narrative regarding this protected class.
I truly hope the family has a very good lawyer.
The senselessness of this is astounding
I don’t live there or anywhere remotely close. I just happen to go through there about twice a year and also know people who do live in the area.
I am in Jacksonville Florida and our Police/Sheriff’s department does not do as they do up there. They just arrested a cop that was stealing money out of people’s cars during searches.
I totally agree and fear this woman’s name is going to be dragged through mud.
She wouldn’t be the first person killed by police who mistook a cell phone for a weapon.
But it was a sex assault call. Wouldn’t think they’d figure a woman running up to them was the victim?
