A lawyer for the family of an Australian woman shot dead by police in Minneapolis says suggestions officers feared an ambush were "ludicrous".
Robert Bennett said Justine Damond was in her pyjamas when she approached them and "was not a threat to anyone".
Ms Damond was shot after approaching two officers in their car on Saturday after reporting a suspected rape.
Mr Bennett has acted in similar cases, including the high-profile police shooting of Philando Castile in 2016.
Fred Bruno, the lawyer for Matthew Harrity, whose partner killed Ms Damond, 40, had said: "It is reasonable to assume an officer in that situation would be concerned about a possible ambush."
But Mr Bennett told CBS News: "I think that's ludicrous. It's disinformation. It doesn't have any basis in fact."
He added: "She obviously wasn't armed, was not a threat to anyone, and nor could she have reasonably been perceived to be."
Officer Mohamed Noor, who shot Ms Damond in the abdomen in an upmarket neighbourhood of the city, has refused to be interviewed by investigators, as is his legal right.

Had it been a revolver being shot the driver would have likely caught a face full of burning gas escaping from between the cylinder and the barrel.
I don’t believe for a second that the Noor guy thought it was an ambush.
You dont understand. He is Minneapolis’ shining first Somali muslem on the force. He is to celebrated and lifted up.
He has so many liberal identifiers I seriously doubt any rules apply to him.
Obviously the left is going to do all they can to blame the dead woman and to charge her with threatening the life of an armed cop seated in a car with another cop.
He’s an incompetent diversity hire at best.
Surely you jest. I know exactly where this occurred and also the issues at hand in Mineapolistan.
Oh, well, in that case, I guess he's innocent.
Something tells me a massive round of white flight is coming down on Minneapolis like a freight train.
White people riot with moving vans.
So the other cop is covering for his partner. Great.
“Minneapolis PD is the most unprofessional that I have dealt with. They make the Keystone Cops and Barney Fife look good.”
Been that way for decades. Goes back at least as far as Bozo or Booza or however the hell it spelled its name.
Not just the left. The police department will too.
That’s like asking what took Nidal Hassan so long to go full tilt jihad.
He may have, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t trigger happy.
Yep the refusal is very queer
Was it three, or just one?
Local article refers to one shot, but it also says she was shot behind her house, when in fact she was a block away.
Bttt.
5.56mm
“IIRC, the shooter was in the passenger seat and shot across the car through the open window on the drivers side. Police cars not being all that large these days, that would suggest that the muzzle was right in front of the face of the driver. I wonder if his (or her) hearing has returned. Had to be a rude surprise.”
Maybe a little lead splatter in the eyes too? Doubt hearing will ever be the same again. Permanent tinnitus almost for sure. Swell job there!
Apparently, he didn’t even ask her to stop, or show her hands. People try to compare this to the Philando shooting, but it doesn’t really match at all. In Philando, we had a suspect who the officer claimed matched a description of an armed robber, who when asked to get his paperwork said “I have a gun”, and who then did not stop when the officer told him to stop.
In THIS case, we have a woman who called the police to report a possible crime, who is walking up to the officers who came in order to presumably give them information, and one of the cops shocks his partner by pulling his gun and shooting her though HIS window.
“If it was an upmarket neighborhood then that makes it more likely the scene of the shooting was reasonably well lit. At least enough to recognize a woman in her pajamas. As I recall the initial call to the police was for a possible sexual assault so this could have easily been the victim rather than the caller, as far as the cops knew. They should have been on the lookout for a possible sexual assault victim. A woman running toward them in pajamas would certainly fit that description. “
Your thinking what a normal rational person would think. Apparently that’s not who they are hiring these days.
There apparently has never been an ambush of an officer in this neighborhood in all of recorded history. So yes, ambushes do happen, but context matters.
I think the other cop knows he’s going down, that’s why he isn’t talking.
