I'll be posting more stories related to nuclear physics, Cold War, nuclear weapons, radiation, and related topics occasionally.
Videos of these low-level flyover tests are at the link.

That North Korean bomb is supposed to be around here somewhere.

Seems odd to measure background radiation in such a specific area.

Yes, in that particular area, too.
Or say, Manhattan (no pun intended).

Right?
This is worrisome on multiple levels.
If government officials start leaving, government facilities start shutting down, and cops are suspiciously missing it’s time to go.

Yeah, they definitely have to get the word out because the helo is going to draw a lot of attention.
If one were going to test like this, you’d think they’d go to Area 51, or Utah, or Wyoming, etc.
Odd....

Meaning they are looking for neutron spike because there’s a device in the area.

Nothing to worry about folks. The radiation hazmat suits are just a precaution.

Probably nothing more than rumors

Not really. I would imagine all of DC is being scanned continuously in a piecemeal fashion to create constantly updated base maps of local radiation densities. These base maps would be used to compare a real scan against in the event of an actual search for a nuclear device. Without the comparison to a base map the small signature of a shielded device might be mistaken for a natural radiation source but with the base map any changes (no matter how small) would stick out like a sore thumb.

Was with better half in eastern Virginia at a WWI and WWII aviation museum about four months ago. Had a wonderful tour guide. Many of the aircraft were still being flown a few times a year. Tour guide was nearing 70 plus years thus the perspective was only a few years removed from WWII

No, that spike was just my new Barbeque grill. Cooks in milliseconds.
Is it against the law to moon a NNSA helicopter? I almost mooned Bill Clinton during his inauguration drive up Pennsylvania Avenue but my female colleagues said to just keep it in the office.
To: no-to-illegals
DOE/NNSA is likely not publishing rumors regarding their projects on their web site. You can see stories and videos of similar tests in the same area from the last few years.

Saw a rerun of “Baa Baa Black Sheep” a few months ago - with a couple of pristine P-38’s. I hope those made it to a museum somewhere, several decades ago.
