Torque is force at a distance. HP is a measure of energy (the ability to do work.) Got the degree and 40 years of building fast machines. HP and torque are in fact closely related and as we both know,

HP = Torque x RPM ÷ 5252

so with a properly geared machine HP and torque are effectively equivalent measures of potential performance.
