I'm looking for a Chrome extension that will make all embedded videos "Click to start." Auto starting videos, like Foxnews, et al are annoying and use lots of bandwidth on my metered connection.
I have looked at Chrome Extensions and can't find what I'm looking for. Lots of stop autoplay for Youtube, but that's not what I'm looking for. I need something universal.
Disable Flash. Re-enable when there is a video you must see.
I’d like such an extension as well.
I hate those vids that just play automatically.
You can turn off the audio or pause them but they still take up bandwidth downloading the media files :-/
A few years ago I wrote a simple program in Delphi that would go to an html address and re-write a news article by replacing lots of names and words with more suitable right-leaning replacements...it was hilarious :-) Maybe I should resurrect that old program and let freepers have some fun. A browser extension could be created to do the same thing...lol It would give a site like the New York Times a whole new look. The coding is mostly just simple string handling.
Yup, I wish the whole web was as friendly as FR.
maybe settings in your browser ?

Autoplay is exactly the reason why I never ever ever go to big Network fancy websites that send you 10 trillion things before you get to the text sentence or two you wanted to read.
websites of MSM companies are like the gulag archipelago, many of them won’t let you go. It’s like the roach motel, they check in but they can’t check out.
that is why I always post a simple picture of any free republic story that requires a photo, so that others don’t have to go to that network.
but so few freepers know how to post photos.
it’s crazy, there will be 100 responses and no one post the photo of the story.
cripes...I didn’t address this to you.
I’ve added this to Opera and Slimjet. ( see article below - links to extensions in article)
Opera has there own settings for stopping some of this. Slim jet does not.
IE seems to have it in its settings, I haven’t tried it yet.
EDGE doesn’t seem to have it in its settings.

Thank You
Bkm for later
Thank you so much. I’ve been plagued by “autoplay” for a long time now.
Thanks.
Used to use Firefox but changed to Slimjet which is based on Chrome. Got anything for Chrome?
Thank You Varmint Al!
That worked like a charm!
Thanks for the NYT article. It recommends the Disable HTML5 Autoplay extension which I downloaded some time back and tried. It doesn’t work for webpages not coded in HTML5.
I’m looking for something more universal.
Agreed. Bump!
IMHO, images posted to FR should not have a width greater than 600 pixels. This is easily done by adding the width=600 qualifier to the img tag.
I was wondering about this literally yesterday. It cannot be done on a mac as I understand it, unless the user wants to go into terminal and do some tinkering.
“its crazy, there will be 100 responses and no one post the photo of the story.”
Then on some threads, there will be half a dozen video clips posted having little or nothing to do with the story, and they all auto-play, eating up bandwidth. No problem for people with fast internet and unlimited data, not so good for people clicking on the thread only to find a chunk of their plan just got used up viewing some inane video clip.
Wonderful - now, how do I turn off the 'touchpad' on a laptop...
Thanks for the tip.
