Do the math - if it works out I highly recommend the retirement route. Wife retired at 62 and 2 years later I did same. Both immediately tapped Social Security and moved IRAs to a safe fund.

Lost my job at the age of 56 and spent the next year looking for a new job. Never found one... I thought it was the end of the world........

Well it wasn't, it was the start of a new life of fun......

“drilling manager that retired said he was going to put a bit on the front of his car and drive until somebody asked him what it was.”

When my friend in Alaska retired he said he would drive south until someone asked him why there was an electrical plug sticking out of the front of his car. IIRC, that’s exactly what he did.

“One of the best functioning government departments is the SS admin. If you call them and ask questions the CSRs will bend over backwards trying to help you “

I agree. After expecting the worst, I spent a few days psyching myself up to call them the first time. Excellent customer service!

Right now I’m wishing there was a place with no broken record days of hot or cold. We are in the summer pattern of endless days of nothing but high 90s. At least this year it is not low 100s. Dad said summer got harder every year. Yes it does. Probably not a lot more of them to go through though so it isnt worth moving.

Been in Oil and Gas since the early 70’s and managed to survive all the up’s and downs even 1998! Made allot of money and even managed to hang on to some of it. Made my last move back in February of 2016 and bought a 25% stake in in a field with some old stripper wells. All are sitting right on top of of the Cline Shale. 5 of the 14 I’ve already plugged due to bad casing but the remaining will stand up to reentry. The first two have performed as expected and I’m drilling the third one right now. The oil hasn’t been quite what I expected but I expect that to increase once I can get the gas pressure down. Between the first two I’m flowing just over 1200 MCF daily and they’ve been online for 11 months and 9 months respectively. Two more years and this project will be completed. These will be my retirement package on the way out. Plus I’ll be drawing full SS while this is going on. We’ve got our eyes on Northern Arizona around the Springerville area where she and I plan on chasing Elk for awhile instead of the Whitetails of West TX.

Good philosophy. And you can continue to work after you start collecting SS.

Hubby retired at 53, me at 55. We made sure we were ready money wise to make it to 62 when social security would start. SS just became ‘free money’. Have never regretted a day of it. Life is too short to do nothing but work.
