The attack happened at a Glacier View Ranch campsite. The teen woke up to a "crunching sound."
(CNN)A camp staffer at a Christian summer camp in Colorado received medical care after he was made awake early Sunday by a bear chewing on his head. The 19-year-old said that he thought he was dreaming as he heard a "crunching sound," only to wake up in "immense pain" as the black bear attempted to drag him away from the Glacier View Ranch campsite, Colorado Parks & Wildlife spokeswoman Jennifer Churchill told CNN.
The victim -- who teaches wilderness survival at the camp -- told CNN affiliate KMGH about the ordeal.
"The crunching noise, I guess, was the teeth scraping against the skull as it dug in," the victim said. "It grabbed me... and pulled me. Then it bit the back of my head and (dragged) me," he told KMGH. The animal managed to drag the teenager for about 10 -12 feet before it was scared away by other staff members. "When it was dragging me, that was the slowest part. It felt like it went forever."

I might've still been attacked, but I can't imagine sleeping so soundly that I couldn't hear a bear until it had it's mouth around my head!
So what’s the real story about bear attacks? I’ve heard - don’t surprise them, don’t get between them and their cubs, leave them alone and they’ll leave you alone, and if attacked, play dead because they only attack aggressors... Sounds mostly like BS to me.
If they kid was sleeping, he was as much “playing dead” as is possible without actually being dead, yet still was sought out as a meal.
Any truly experience Freepers who can enlighten me?
Are you allowed to launch Estes rockets at Estes Park?
Use a Bear-Bag/canister hanging it from a tree 200 feet away, and don’t take food or toothpaste to “sleeping bag” at night. A teachable moment. Liberals don’t understand physics or the law of nature.... and they never listened to Mother Nature!
Our ancestors worked hard to get OUT of the wilderness and create civilization to avoid wild animals. Stay OUT of the wilderness!
I have a friend who lives in western Montana. She has a lovely covered porch that she must vacate at sundown for the safety of the house. It simply is not safe to be outside after dark.
As a matter of fact, yes, the rules DO permit you to launch Estes rockets...but only at attacking bears.
Decades ago our tent trailer was shaken one night by a bear at Jasper, Canada. We made a lot of noise and it went away. Told the park ranger the next morning and she shook her head and went to the next campsite. She came back quickly and told us she was getting a bear trap as the tent next to us was ripped to shreds. The tent owner luckily stayed the night in town. The ranger told us bears like shampoo and liquid soap and can smell them from far away. That tent had both inside the ripped tent.
I used to live in the deep woods in extreme Northern California, and we'd sleep out fairly often. I snore loud enough that Black Bears a quarter mile away would stop, look at each other wide-eyed and say, 'Good grief! What the hell is THAT?
:-)
Never go into the woods unarmed. Or anywhere else for that matter.
A bear food commercial:
“You know it is good when you hear a crunching sound”
Simple answer...BANG!!
#1..Bears do not think. They react. #2. Bears cannot distinguish between sushi, bologna or YOU. #3. Bears don’t have wallets. Instead of looking for a good deal on food, they look for EASY food. #4. Bears are lazy. Don’t give them an opportunity to eat you, piss them off or try to pet them. That’s all I have learned about them.
It is more effective than an alarm clock, you have to admit. I live in bear country. I am always armed. It’s that simple.
You can’t really only be one with nature until you’re lunch. That place is really in wild country five miles or less out of Boulder. Wild enough I guess.
Could have been worse.........it, could have been the last sound he ever heard.
I’ll give this kid the benefit of the doubt. He was at a Christian camp as a staffer. Most of those kids don’t lean liberal.
Sometimes you take all the bear precautions and still get visited by the creatures.
My sister in law was leading a group of girls on a backcountry trip in bear country. Her and the other leader had a bear country tent, meaning no food in it ever. A young bear entered camp and meandered over to their tent whereupon it proceeded to eat two brand new Big Agnes air mattresses.
These certainly had no food. I think it was their first morning in camp.
My brother was kind of miffed when he found out. He just dropped $60 each on the air mattresses.
Black bears are basically big overgrown rodents.
I’ve only camped front country in Colorado yet we still practiced serious bear prevention. It’s a different ballgame there than in the Midwest. Generally food is prepared and eaten far away from tents.
