Benavidez daughter recalls sitting in the backseat of their car as a child and, upon observing that blood was dripping from the back of her fathers head, mentioning to him that he was bleeding.
And he would reach back there and literally pull out a piece of shrapnel that was making its way through his skin. And he would just throw it away; you could hear the click.
You know, his daughter says, He was quick to correct you if you said, How did you win the medal? He would say, I didnt win this medal, I earned it.
As the doctor was zipping up the body bag, Benavidez proved he was alive by spitting in the doctors face,
much like he had been spitting in the face of death for the previous six hours.
I was in the audience at the ceremony at “Ground Zero” in the court yard of the Pentagon. We called it that because everyone figured many Soviet nuc’s were pointed at ground zero.
Whoa. That was intense.
MSG Roy Benavidez,
one of the MANY reasons, we hold his country so close to our Hearts.
Thank you for the post and the opportunity to
1. Hear this brave man tell his tale.
2. See our great President R. Reagan once again. Where have we failed as a country to be so blessed and in less than 50 years later be so damned?
GOD BLESS AMERICA
MAGA
True American Hero.

Thank you. And thank you for your service.
LTC Drake was the CO of Project Sigma (Detachment B-56) not far outside of Saigon close to the Viet military academy. O’Connor had been on the ground as he was one of the two USSF on the recon team Roy went in to assist. Sigma had the sharpest S-1 personnel officer I ever met in the Army. He was a 1965 West Point grad. Sadly he died last year in April.
I have great friends from my time in RVN. Here is a link to Colonel Howard. Many of us posted remarks about him.
I got to hear him give almost that same exact speech in person one time. Back in the late 80’s if I remember correctly. He was at an event with Col. Robert L. Howard - also a remarkable MOH recipient.
That’s some real American heroism right there.
