Says it right there. A person I know was saying those names were formed from tribal names in Africa. Uh huh, yup.

I worked with, and was quite friendly with,a young black woman 25 years ago.
She said to me,”Ah,we just make up the names.”.

Two hats. One with vowels one with consonants. Pick and choose, voila, a name.

A doctor I know told me that when he was doing his residency he and the other young residents would make up names for the kids of these young single mothers who hadn’t given it a single thought. Sometimes they’d just look around, maybe see some meds in a cabinet, and morph a name out of that. Gotta put something on the paperwork.

That may have been the way Nosmo King got his first and middle names. :=)

the child wasnt taken to the hospital until two weeks later, when she was turned over to her father. Dad might have a chance of getting full custody.

“maybe see some meds in a cabinet, and morph a name out of that.”
That’s hysterical.
My mother worked at Boston City Hall-—Registry of Births.
A woman came in once for a birth certificate for her daughter.
The child’s first name was “Femmulley”.
My mother asked for the spelling,so the woman spelled it out for her-— F-E-M-A-L-E.

Residents doing long rotations in big city ERs can get pretty cynical. I wish I could remember some of the examples he gave me, they were hilarious.

Nope.
My mother told me that story many years ago and, believe me,my mother would not make anything up.

I believe the names are formed from the names used in the Mini-Series ROOTS. Which was fictional and plagiarized.

You wouldn’t believe what teachers go through these days with the name thing . . .even with the most simple name. . . in one class alone you can have Mary, Maree, Marree, Mari, Marie, Marrie, Marey, Mery, Mayre, Merry, etc. etc. etc.
