That is their popular name. The proper name is “whale killers.”

No, they’re not friendly. There’s no affirmative action in the ocean, only eat or be eaten. These guys are probably the most intelligent out there (or, perhaps, a not-too-distant 2nd to porpoises), so they can hunt cooperatively in packs to great effect against large opponents.

Therre was a documentary that I saw about a tour boat that witnessed a confrontation between an Orca and a Great White. They took it underwater at one point and it was quiet, until the Orca came up with the shark in its mouth.

Now, the shark was in an upside-down position, which will make them go comatose. The experts that they spoke to wondered if the Orcas have figured out that this is a weakness of sharks and are now taking advantage of that.

The Orca(s) did go immediately for the liver of the shark when they tore it open.

It was a kind of fascinating documentary, solving the question of who would win a battle: Orca vs. Great White shark. In this case, at least, Orca.
