About a year ago, temporarily in Florida, I accidentally discovered Zane Grey Theatre, hosted by Dick Powell. I’m 59, but had never heard of it,just before my time. I don’t have cable myself, but have since found episodes on YouTube.

It’s amazing. Each episode is a stand alone short story featuring many actors you will recognize.

Since Bill Clinton was elected I stopped watching prime time tv. Haven’t watched network news since Reagan was elected. I now limit myself to movies I’ve already seen, the western channel, some ME TV, and selective sporting events.

Spent many years overseas as a kid, catching up on black and white westerns was unable to see across the pond in the sixties. Good shows with solid morals.

Have Gun - Will Travel. From before I was born, but what a great discovery for me! You can get the whole series on DVD for 50 bucks.

In Denver, lots of free over the airwaves TV. Westerns every Saturday. Wagon Train. Bonanza. Raw Hide. Palidan. Laramie. Rin Tin Tin. Hondo. Maverick. Nichols. And lots of great old movies. Almost too many free channels to chose from. And with Red Box at every grocery store for 2$ DVD rentals there are lots of affordable options for viewing. Long live the broadcast towers on Lookout Mountain.

The local channels in metro KC carry ME TV and Antenna TV, which show old Perry Masons, Rockford Files, 77 Sunset Strip, Maverick, Harry O, Bat Masterson, Death Valley Days, etc. from late 50's, 60's, 70's.

You might check those out in your area. They are on as an alternative to the cable channels or satellite.

There is a ton of excellent programming on European TV. Just watched Unforgotten on ITV, stunningly good crime drama. You can find the episodes on dailymotion.com

Agree with today’s tv offerings. I looked through Netflix’s movies yesterday only to find a ton of gay films. Disgusting filth.

While not retro, the “Longmire” series is good if you like sort of Westerns. The prior seasons, and the upcoming final sixth, are on Netflix. The sheriff is Robert Taylor.

Along with MeTV and Antenna TV, I like INSP. Their shows include: Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Daniel Boone, Little House on the Prairie, The Waltons, Dr. Quinn, Matlock, Big Valley, High Chaparral, The Virginian, Walker, Texas Ranger, along with some original programming. I like old movies from the 30’s and 40’s, so I watch TCM.

Wow! I knew there were probably some Freepers who are in the same boat as us...disgusted with current TV and the agendas they push but I had no idea I would get so many suggestions! Thank you all!!

It is shame that so few shows today have any values to them at all. Before we even begin to watch a "new" show on Amazon or Netflix, we research a parents guide (and we are in our 50s!) to make sure we avoid starting the show only to have to stop it once we discover the push of gay characters! I don't care if the characters are gay or not! I don't need to know their lifestyle unless it is pertinent to the story and 9 out of 10 times it has nothing to do with anything!

I started watching old movies with my grandmother in the 1960s (well, not old then!) and once I had children I realized I could leave the TV on old shows and not worry about what would be shown on the screen, didn't apply to some films but for the most part it did. I got hooked and now that is about all I watch...TCM, Western channels, JLTV or INSP. I could watch Daniel Boone all day long and have about 20 episodes taped now to get to! I watch a Jack Benny episode almost every night and laugh as if it was made today! He never gets old! I was very surprised I was able to find Peter Gunn on Prime and enjoy that one and the music is great!!!
I will make a suggestion too.....Dr Blake is a great Australian Show that is pretty good.

The Texan - Starring Rory Calhoun! Sponsored by Chesterfield! (I think - it was one of the cigarettes popular at that time.)
