Retro TV Suggestions/Help with Encore Western tune (Vanity)
06/24/2017 | 4everontheright

Posted on 06/24/2017 6:50:25 AM PDT by 4everontheRight

I gave up on any good shows on regular TV a long time ago, found myself watching shows on Amazon Prime and Netflix like Peter Gunn. I also found JLTV through DirecTV and watch great old shows like the Jack Benny Show and the Dinah Shore Show.....sad I know but wondering if other Freepers have found any nostalgic shows worth mentioning?
Also, does anyone know who does the song between shows on Encore Western. Not really what I would call a "western" tune but I am just curious who does that song.

I’ll bet he wasn’t a big lib back during the Rockford Files days. I don’t much remember Hollywood getting too political back then...I mean I know they were but nothing like the stuff you see today.

All episodes of 12 O’Clock High (tv series), Combat, and “The Prisoner” are on Youtube.

Google “James Garner politics”, and see what you get. Here’s one small sample:

“Garner is what he calls a ‘bleeding-heart liberal,’ having participated in the 1963 civil rights March on Washington and later advocating for a number of progressive causes. He voted for Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1952, he writes, but never cast a ballot for a Republican again. He voted for Adlai Stevenson in 1956, and calls him “the most intelligent presidential candidate we’ve ever had. I think Obama runs a close second.”

“He’s also critical about Charlton Heston — either as an actor or defender of civil rights. As Garner describes it, Heston appointed himself leader of the Hollywood group that went to the March on Washington, and even tamped down a suggestion by Marlon Brando that the performers chain themselves to the Lincoln Memorial. But the next year, Heston switched parties and backed Barry Goldwater.”

I really like the old “Rockford Files” - good writing, film, and acting.

Almost wish I didn’t know that...LOL!

The fact that he marched in the 1963 civil rights stuff is enough for me to despise him.

Along with MeTV and Antenna TV, I like INSP. Their shows include: Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Daniel Boone, Little House on the Prairie, The Waltons, Dr. Quinn, Matlock, Big Valley, High Chaparral, The Virginian, Walker, Texas Ranger, along with some original programming. I like old movies from the 30’s and 40’s, so I watch TCM.

Wow! I knew there were probably some Freepers who are in the same boat as us...disgusted with current TV and the agendas they push but I had no idea I would get so many suggestions! Thank you all!!

It is shame that so few shows today have any values to them at all. Before we even begin to watch a "new" show on Amazon or Netflix, we research a parents guide (and we are in our 50s!) to make sure we avoid starting the show only to have to stop it once we discover the push of gay characters! I don't care if the characters are gay or not! I don't need to know their lifestyle unless it is pertinent to the story and 9 out of 10 times it has nothing to do with anything!

I started watching old movies with my grandmother in the 1960s (well, not old then!) and once I had children I realized I could leave the TV on old shows and not worry about what would be shown on the screen, didn't apply to some films but for the most part it did. I got hooked and now that is about all I watch...TCM, Western channels, JLTV or INSP. I could watch Daniel Boone all day long and have about 20 episodes taped now to get to! I watch a Jack Benny episode almost every night and laugh as if it was made today! He never gets old! I was very surprised I was able to find Peter Gunn on Prime and enjoy that one and the music is great!!!
I will make a suggestion too.....Dr Blake is a great Australian Show that is pretty good.

Have Gun - Will Travel
My DVR records two episodes every Saturday morning on MeTV - it was on during my childhood, but Dad liked another show that was in the same time slot - Perry Mason or something worse. He was devastated years later upon finding out Raymond Burr was a homo.
Good acting, great song at the end sung by Johnny Western.

The Texan - Starring Rory Calhoun! Sponsored by Chesterfield! (I think - it was one of the cigarettes popular at that time.)

Mrs. JohnnyP bought the Hopalong Cassidy series several years ago. He was not shy to be first to draw a gun and blast away.

She bought the Have Gun series a few years ago. We both were surprised at how wimpy Paladin was, compared to Hoppy.

Who says great minds don’t think alike? I’m looking for the name of that song also. Ran a Google search yesterday and struck out.

Dish now has BUZZR.......a repeat of old game shows that I watched as a kid. Some of the commercials are from the late 50’s and early 60’s. Hub and I watch it all the time and enjoy going back to our childhoods......an escape from the crap going on around us today. Too bad AT&T U-verse doesn’t carry it since we’re thinking about switching but maybe they will in the near future.

I think he explained that in one of his last interviews. His wife was a lib and to keep peace he went along. He was probably a closet conservative.......that’s what I think anyway.

You might want to check out Yancy Derringer (example - "Yancy Derringer Full Episode 23 - Thunder on the River"), and "The Real Mccoys" ("The Real Mccoys - Season 1 Pilot Episode 1 Californy, Here We Come").

Another interesting show, about two outlaws trying to turn over a new leaf, was called "Alias Smith and Jones", but, sadly, one of the actors in that series had real life issues, and ended up committing suicide. This video is just their theme song - "Alias Smith and Jones 1971–1973 Extended TV Theme HD". (I know the show's episodes are available on DVD, but I don't know if they are available for viewing online somewhere.)

Yeah there is smoking in many, if not most of them, though not by often by women.

Funny though, no matter how much I loathe the smell of smoke and tobacco in general, I'm not nearly as offended as I am by all the body piercings, tattoos on every inch of the exposed skin and there's plenty of that and that's just the women, gays prancing around kissing, adults stripping and pretending to fornicate or kids using the four letter word for copulate every sentence!

Me too, on the passing of Garner, however far left the man was, he didn't offend us by expounding on his beliefs every show! Rockford writers only occasionally let their leftist ideals scream at their audience each and every week, or it wouldn't have been nearly so popular!

Dittos on Rock Hudson, while most of his movie acting was shlocky and overly melodramatic, tv show, never watched but one never knew his sexual proclivities until his full blown AIDS was terminal.

Same with Richard Chamberlin, at least I never knew he was "light in the loafers!"

I'm incensed at all the gay activists today, claiming various historic figures, composers, writers, actors, etc. were either gay or "had latent homosexual tendencies!" It's easy to claim something about one's character years, even centuries after they are dead!

Kind of like black activists in the 70s, 80s, etc. claiming everything had been discovered or invented by "blacks in Egypt" or Muslims, or Russia!
