...It was the fish of a lifetime—a 76.5-pound white marlin that won him the world’s largest annual billfish tournament, the White Marlin Open, and $2,818,662 in prize money...

He swears it happened just like that.

Fishing is full of tall tales about the one that got away, and polygraph tests... are now used in high-stakes fishing tournaments. Mr. Heasley, like many winners, was required to take the test.

Texas and Alabama, have passed laws to combat fish-tournament fraud.

A few weeks later, Mr. Heasley, along with two crew mates, one of whom said he was hung over after drinking 15 beers the night before, according to court documents, took another polygraph test. All three failed

When asked why he was nervous during the test, he said, “I don’t know, man. I’m just a fisherman.”

With such large prizes on the line, you'd think that the tournament sponsors would provide a sealed Go-Pro that has to be mounted on each boat to document the landing of the fish.

Consult with the producers of Deadliest Catch.

The proscribed start time, and the time they started fishing.

THe early fisherman,catches the fish.
He also got caught.

I remember a story a few years back when some professional bass fisherman got busted after putting a bag full of sinkers down the throat of one of his lunkers before the weigh in, winning a bunch of tournament money.

The guy who came in second protested because the fish just didn't look quite big enough to weigh that much, so they cut the fish open and found the sinkers.

a 76.5-pound white marlin

???????

Are there some zeros missing, or a decimal misplaced?

Maybe a 765-pound Marlin would be a record... but seems to me they've been landed bigger.

Some bass tournaments might have as many as 400 boats.

With a $2.8 million first prize? Even at $1,000 per boat for a GoPro and tamper proof case with extended battery and memory, that's $400,000 to protect a $2.8 million first prize. And the cameras are reusable on the next tournament.

"What did they do, buy it from Amazon?"

That would take a heck of a drone to fly it out to them ...

It was the tournament prize money that was the record.
