California is the poster child for solar energy: in 2016, 13% of the state's power came from solar sources. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, California is in the lead for the cumulative amount of solar electric capacity installed in 2016.
In fact, the California is generating so much solar energy that it is resorting to paying other states to take the excess electricity in order to prevent overloading power lines. According to the Los Angeles Times, Arizona residents have already saved millions in 2017 thanks to Californias contribution.

Is there way more to this story than the author is telling? Seems a little far fetched. If they have that much, not that they would use the money wisely, they could dig themselves out of any financial hole they're in, with that much energy on hand.
Paying other states to take its excess so its power lines don’t melt? Sheer fiscal f*cking genius that it takes a full-retard lib to appreciate.
They still have to build gas plants, because solar peak production doesn’t line up with actual peak consumption.
And California’s electric bills are dramatically higher than other states.
Yeah, right! I almost believe that Californistan is this stupid to pay others to take their "excess" electricity instead of selling it.....
Iowa gets 33 percent of its power from wind turbines.
Power generated is not the only factor.
What did it cost to set up the solar collection-to-delivery system? What did it cost the taxpayer? Can it continue to deliver without taxpayer money?
If it takes a constant inflow of taxpayer money, and if the cost of production per kw is greater than coal or gas or nuclear, it’s a hose job.
Have solar and wind turbines reached the break even mark without government subsidies? Save the planet by bankrupting we the people!
California is embarrassing. Period.
Average Price of Electricity to Ultimate Customers by End-Use (Residential):
California: 18.87
National Ave (including AK & HI): 12.90
Boy, they are geniuses in California!
Taxpayer takes it in the kisser coming and going...
Well, the state of California is geographically located in one of the best regions on Earth for solar power. Small wonder why there are multiple companies doing land office business installing solar power panels on home roofs up and down the Central Valley.
At what cost? Panels are not cheap, and for most folks, the only way to afford solar is to clinch with the tax man....
Not on a bet, or until solar panels are a reasonable cost/expense.

Good for them but their idiot legislators in Sacto cant seem to balance a budget. Get back to us Caleeforrneeaa if you can build the train to nowhere to run on solar power.
That must be why they have brownouts and are begging people not to run their air conditioners.
Um...there’s generally LOTS of sunshine in most of California. They’d be failing if they did not use solar...sheesh. Now, solar in Northwest...with lots cloudy days...not so good.
There you go.
If you like paying 50% higher electricity bills PLUS pay the hidden tax subsidies, you can have 1/8 of your power come from solar.
It’s all yours, California. Really helping the low and middle income folks aren’t you?
This is exactly right. I have a colleague who lives in California and basically the state (taxpayers) paid her to install solar panels on her house. She is now generating most of the electricity usage in her home courtesy of the California taxpayer.
The state is also paying for her to lease an electric vehicle, which she gets for almost free and charges for free at state-subsidized charging stations.
There is no way she would have done this without the very heavy subsidies.
And only the more affluent citizens do this because there is some up-front cost (not nearly what the actual cost is of course and this cost is quickly recovered from the "free" energy provided.) So California is actually subsidizing the more wealthy residents with what amounts to free energy.
