Castile was a regular marijuana user who died with high levels of THC, the drugs chemical component, in his system.
...
...Castile was open about his marijuana use, and posted pictures of it on his Instagram account in 2012.
It says he lied on his application for a firearm permit by denying he was unlawful user of any controlled substance.
...Yanez smelled marijuana in Castiles car after pulling him over, and Castile appeared unable to focus or follow commands. Castile ignored the officers repeated demands not to reach for the .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun in his pocket.

Does anyone know if he ACTUALLY had a concealed firearms permit (as claimed)? The Henepin(?) county sheriff originally said that he did NOT have one. Shortly afterward, they said that they were not allowed to give out names of permit holders. Then they said, ignore what we said earlier, we don’t confirm or deny he had a permit.
He supposedly claimed he had one (to the policeman) and his “girlfriend” said it over and over again, but I have never seen a copy of it or heard it from anyone who was in a position to know. Until I do, I won’t believe he had one.
From the dash cam video:
“Sir I do have to tell you I do have a firearm on me”
“Don’t reach for it [then?]”
“don’t pull it out”
“don’t pull it out!”

BFD. He shouldn’t have had to apply for a permit in the first place. He had the right to bear arms.
He also had the right to life. The obligation of that officer was to protect his rights.
Instead, it was mere seconds from the time the victim calmly explained the presence of a firearm - as CCW holders are taught to do to stay legal - to the firing of multiple rounds into the vehicle (with another passenger behind the target, no less).
Anyone whose instinct is to say he deserved it needs to examine whether they really support the right to life, and whether they really support the right to bear arms.
It is in incidents like this where true loyalties are tested; far fewer than I would have previously guessed have passed this test.
Did he deserve to Did? No. Did he bring this on himself? Yes. He was high as a kite and failing to stop pulling his gun out as the officer ordered. He hadn’t been intoxicated he would have complied with the cop’s orders and still been alive.
smoking rope with a baby in the back seat...and we wonder why some kids are underachievers
Wait, I thought he was in training to be the local parish priest??? I hope the fired officer sues the department for firing him after he was acquitted.
We don’t know if he was pulling a gun or not. He was not on camera. AND JUST BECAUSE A COP “THINKS” YOU ARE PULLING A GUN DOES NOT GIVE HIM THE RIGHT TO SHOOT YOU DEAD! The medics who took him away said they found a gun in his pocket. Yes, I was yelling.
He had a permit.
I just watched the first part of the video again and I agree with you. Everything is by the book until it sounds like the deceased is pulling his weapon out despite the shooter cop’s demands to not pull it out. There is an observer cop on the right of the deceased’s car who comes up to the passenger window shortly after the stop. This guy just stands there as the shooter cop pulls his weapon while imploring the about to be corpse to not pull his. After the shooter cop fires half a mag, the observer cop scoots the hell out of the way until he comes back to help “the baby” out of the car. The “baby” looks like out-of- diapers pre-school age. Shoot looks righteous to me.
And yet a JURY found him not guilty. So in essence, it’s the PUBLIC itself which is allowing that which you appear to object to......
Yes, you are correct. As long as the cop says he was reaching in his waistband, I thought it was a gun or he had a gun, he gets off in court. I think the cop needs to see a gun for sure. If he was unarmed. if he had a phone instead of a gun, or it never left his pocket, it should be manslaughter or 2nd degree for the cop. Like a previous poster said- the cop had a duty to protect his rights as well. It doesn’t matter if a person is on drugs, a long term criminal or has warrants, that does not justify killing someone. I know it can be dangerous for the cop, but he can quit anytime he wants too. Danger goes with the job.
CCW websites also mention how to handle traffic stops. Keep your hands visible is the very first rule.
I think the cop was hair-trigger, but I also have seen videos on how fast a perp can pull out a gun and start shooting.
The video also shows the girlfriend was lying. She said Castile was reaching for his license, but the dashcam shows he had already handed something to the cop, presumably his license.
” He had the right to bear arms.
He also had the right to life.
He also had the right to be stupid, which he exercised in grand fashion.
The obligation of that officer is to make it through the day alive, while dealing with all manners of stupid.
‘..the cop had a duty to protect his rights as well.’ Unfortunately that is NOT an officer’s primary obligation. It’s not even a legal obligation. An officer’s ONLY obligation/duty is to uphold and enforce the law within the parameters that the law allows. Period. The jury representing the PUBLIC ruled that the officer did so. For me to blame this particular officer for his actions that occurred within those legal boundaries would be moronic as it is I, the public, which set those boundaries/laws. If corrective action is required to lessen the potential violent interaction between police and civilians then we,the public, need to modify the laws to lessen the chance of a police instigated fatal outcome.
Why do you out leave what Castille said?
Tell me what that sounds like.
A person who adhered to this coward's ethic has no place being allowed to have a gun, never mind a badge, and a salary.
Workers in dozens of industries face down more dangerous conditions all the time and deal with it. When cops go snowflake we've got a serious problem.
Also know why the girlfriend was so emotionless in her video.
High as a kite.
Being that you didn’t see what he saw, I’m not sure how you can be so certain of the validity of his actions.
This perp had a gun and reached for it, that’s showtime.
There’s a term for this, “the quick and the dead”.
