SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Uber is enabling passengers to tip its U.S. drivers with a tap on its ride-hailing app for the first time, part of a push to recast itself as a company with a conscience and a heart.
Besides the built-in tipping option announced Tuesday, Uber is giving drivers an opportunity to make more money in other ways too.

“However, the point of Uber is to be have a transaction-free/light user experience.”
Many people will appreciate that, and may even increase the total amount of the driver’s tips. I, for one, don’t carry much cash with me.
Uber drivers do NOT make 75% of fare. There are up front booking fees and flat rates now that Uber keeps all off.
Plus the rates have been repeatedly slashed - in Atlanta Uber drivers make 56 cents a mile. That’s it. And they pay for all of their auto expenses - vehicle, upkeep, gas, insurance, phone, etc.
So don’t tip if you want, but unless you want slave wage drivers in beat up cars with nothing to lose driving you around you might want to consider greasing the palm of your Uber driver. Regardless of circumstance they are assuming all costs and risks driving you around, stopping DUIs and deaths for very little money. A little direct appreciation and subsidy means a lot to them.
In New Zealand, you don’t tip.
They get upset when you tip.
They pay their people a decent wage.
They are quite content with that system.
If the service is lousy, we have other ways at getting back at server.
No one is forcing you or them to be a Uber driver. There seems to be no shortage of people signing up.
What you are seeing is Uber committing suicide. We might as well go back to taxicabs.
I drive Uber part time. Many do it for a living. I have never had a customer say they prefer cabs. Never. Everyone loves the service. The problem was Travis Kalanick running the company.
Tipping isn’t a matter of deciding whether the person gets paid enough or not. Driving is menial labor, most service jobs are. For me I’m giving low paid service people something extra for good service.
Others choose not to. Some pretend it’s a moral issue but they’re just cheap.
Cheap,huh!?
My job was of great benefit to you.
My military service was of great benefit to you.
When are you going to tip me for all those years of good service?
I wasn’t referring to you sir.
Thank you for your service FRiend!
