(WFLA) — A new report released by the Environmental Defense Fund found that a surprising amount of baby food samples had detectable levels of lead.

Researchers analyzed eleven years of federal data, tested 2,164 baby food samples and found lead in roughly 20 percent of them. The toxic metal was most commonly found in grape juice samples (89 percent), sweet potatoes samples (86 percent), and teething biscuits (47 percent).

As a training provider for all disciplines of lead safe work practices and lead hazard control work, I believe I need to help clarify your statement.

There are two types of poisoning possible when dealing with lead exposure. These are known as acute and chronic. A large dose of lead that can be and is absorbed (the smaller the particulate the more readily the body absorbs it) is called an acute poisoning exposure. When someone is taking in small doses of lead particulates multiple times over a long period of time it is called a chronic exposure and poisoning.

When the amount of ingested or inhaled lead particulates is high enough it can kill you (Encephalopathy) cause you to go into convulsions, put you into a coma or cause hallucinations. There is a lot more that could be addressed but this should give everyone pause for considerations.

Regretfully the lead issue is not fake news. For a starter go to my response to a post done by marktwain it is much worse and more prevalent than you think.

As a training provider for all disciplines of lead safe work practices and lead hazard control work you have a vested interest in magnifying the "lead problem" regardless of whether or not actual science justifies the magnification.

You seem to have some knowledge on the subject but you are putting forth some incorrect information. Your post says nothing about chronic exposures and subsequent poisoning.

What you have just proposed might result in a small child having central nervous system symptoms later. Be careful with what you say. From lower IQ’s to slower development to seizures and death are all possible; especially in children 6 and younger and the fetuses of pregnant women.

Harmless it is not! It can build up in a small persons, or even an adults body until it does real harm. Check out some of the other responses I have been writing and you will get the idea of how lead poisoning actually does its dirty deeds.

Please become more informed before you make such over generalizations about a subject you don’t know enough about.

I am not trying to pick on you or anyone else it is just the fact that you and others are not aware of how lead absorption works that is the issue. Check out some of my other posts and you will see what is really going on.

Sorry you feel that way but your comment is way outside of normal discussions. You don’t have any right to make an assumption like that. You don’t know of all the damage to all of the people that have had lead poisoning.

I know that I am speaking for them when I say that it is real and that the damage is permanent. Yes it is avoidable but you need to be aware of the problem before you can deal with it properly.

Not so coincidentally, one of the symptoms of lead exposure is irritability. Just sayin’.

make an assumption

I assume nothing. You told us all that you're in the "lead safe work practices and lead hazard control" business. Those are your own words, son. I just quoted them.

I know that I am speaking for them

Ah, yes: self-appointed spokesmen. Is there anything they don't know? Is there anything they can't do?

ROFL!!!!

I am so glad you have responded. I would like to know how you equate being involved in the business to only having a ‘vested interest’ that you are accusing me of,as compared to trying to help people know how the actual lead poisoning occurs so they can make informed choices?

By the way I am not a son and am probably your elder, so your ROFL is as inappropriate as the comment from your first response. I am trying very hard to keep this discussion civil.

As for a spokesperson well I guess those that have died from this insidious disease can’t speak for themselves. So I will in an attempt to keep others, including their families, from experiencing the life altering effects of lead poisoning.

In small enough doses, harmless it is. If it was not we would all be dead.

Lead is all over the place.

I asserted that you have a vested interest in magnifying the "lead problem". I did so based on your own words, which I quoted. I see now that you no longer attempt to deny it. That's good.

so your ROFL is as inappropriate

ROFL!!!

I am trying very hard to keep this discussion civil.

That's very difficult for activists and self-appointed spokesmen.

And, of course, one of the symptoms of lead exposure is irritability. Just sayin’.

No, it becomes difficult when some individuals believe they are smarter than everyone else and refuse to be open to new information.

I accept the fact that you are like the horse not willing to take a drink of water after someone has led him to it.

Others may not be so blind as those who refuse to hear or see or understand when someone is trying to help. Your loss.

1) I'm smart enough to know when I'm being bullshitted. Some folks aren't.

2) No, I won't drink the water when it's poisoned with junk science. There's a difference between water and grape Kool-Aid ... if you get my drift.

3) Rejecting junk science is my gain.

So now you are an expert enough to determine what is junk science in regards to lead poisoning. I am will to venture a guess that you are not aware of the total number of people being adversely affected from lead poisoning, or that lead poisoning affects every system in the human body except the respiratory system.

From reading your responses I don’t think you even have a clue as to all of the ways lead gets into our living spaces so it can poison people.

But, since you are a self proclaimed sage please enlighten everyone with your abilities.

Thanks for insulting my intelligence. My post was simply to encourage FReepers to not buy in to what the food Nazi’s are postulating. The news report and even the actual report is bereft of many real, actual numbers or data.

They are trying to justify their existence and continued paychecks.

I am will to venture a guess

That's typical of activists and self-appointed spokesmen. Guesses and innuendoes.

the total number of people being adversely affected from lead

The year is just more than halfway over and already 300 people in Chicago have been killed, directly, by exposure to lead. Did you know that?

I was not trying to insult anyone’s intelligence when I started posting information on this subject. Ignorance of subject matter is something that can be overcome with knowledge of the subject matter.

In regards to the insidious nature of lead poisoning, jumping to conclusions, along with the resulting misinformation, can cause pain and suffering needlessly.

So I apologize for the way that post came across. I just think people need to be more educated on this subject.

I do know that the number should be unacceptable even for the liberals that run that city and the state of Illinois.

I don’t know how many were killed with hollow points, or soft points or full metal jackets. I suppose some of those fatalities might have been from a shot gun using lead slugs, or lead shot or even metal shot.

Lead is a metal.

But you already knew that ... You're the expert. Or, at least, the activist and self-appointed spokesman.
