Pittsburgh almost lost the team to Kansas City a while back in the pre-Crosby days. People sometimes forget that Lemieux had to come out of retirement in 2000 just to rescue the team.

Bingo. His legacy is more than just being a hockey player, but the one having the foresight to buy into the team (to be fair, it was the only way he could get what was owed to him) and keep it in Pittsburgh. If Mario Lemieux had not been a Penguin, there probably would not be a NHL team in Pittsburgh.
