Dont know how old it is. Locally common especially at Polish churches and Belgian church Kermisses.
The one that surprise me as being "kosher" is the Packer Mass on game days. Ive never been to one so I dont know how thats different. I like to imagine them passing the ball back and forth between the priest and members of the congregation during chants and drinking beer from eucharist cups but I doubt its quite that fun.
