THE Godfather has pipped The Empire Strikes Back to be voted greatest movie of all time.
The 1972 Mafia epic that starred Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone topped a poll by film mag Empire of 20,000 readers.
At third was Christopher Nolans 2008 Batman film The Dark Knight, for which Heath Ledger won an Oscar for his performance as The Joker.
The Shawshank Redemption came fourth, despite often being hailed best-ever film online.
La La Land released six months ago came 62nd.
The all-time top ten are as follows:
1. The Godfather
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. The Dark Knight
4. The Shawshank Redemption
5. Pulp Fiction
6. Goodfellas
7. Raiders of the Lost Ark
8. Jaws
9. Star Wars
10. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Disagree with majority of most overrated.
Apocalypse Now
Bladerunner
Brazil
Blues Brothers
Empire Strikes Back
2001: A Space Odyssey
THX 1138
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Mad Max: The Road Warrior
The Big Lebowski
Aliens
The Mission
TRON
Pan’s Labyrinth
The Road
Led Zeppelin: The Song Remains the Same
Brando makes the movie. Ernest Borgnine would have been a joke. One of the Oscars biggest mistakes was awarding him Best Actor for Marty, followed by Best Picture for Shakespeare in Love.
Great choice. The Wizard of Oz (1925), which co-stars Oliver Hardy--before he teamed up with Stan Laurel--is available for free on Youtube.
What happened to Attack of the Killer Tomatoes?
They picked the wrong LOTR movie to put in there. Return of the King is by far the better movie of the 3.
Never seen The Godfather, have no desire to either. Not a mafia fan.
What? No room for any of the Troll movies? ;-)
I’d put Empire at#1 and Star Wars at #2. Thought the Godfather films were gross.
Yes, that was good. I enjoyed it a lot and I still stays with me. However, in today’s culture and tastes, the younger crowd would not appreciate it at all. Shame.
add Chinatown to whatever list.
Wow. I did not know that. Fascinating.
Bridge Over the River Kwai...
I would add one more to your list: “The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh.”
That’s a great movie.
How Green Was My Valley
second that.
Feh, it’s as if they never saw Slapshot
