THE Godfather has pipped The Empire Strikes Back to be voted greatest movie of all time.
The 1972 Mafia epic that starred Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone topped a poll by film mag Empire of 20,000 readers.
At third was Christopher Nolans 2008 Batman film The Dark Knight, for which Heath Ledger won an Oscar for his performance as The Joker.
The Shawshank Redemption came fourth, despite often being hailed best-ever film online.
La La Land released six months ago came 62nd.
The all-time top ten are as follows:
1. The Godfather
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. The Dark Knight
4. The Shawshank Redemption
5. Pulp Fiction
6. Goodfellas
7. Raiders of the Lost Ark
8. Jaws
9. Star Wars
10. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
All movies listed were entertaining with the exception of Pulp Fiction. Utter nihilistic crap.
Birdemic: Shock and Terror
Lost Skeleton of Cadavra
Plan 9 From Outer Space
Manos: Hands Of Fate
Robot Monster
Glen Or Glenda?
The Conqueror
The Horror of Party Beach
Santa Claus Conquers The Martians
The Room
Terror Of Tiny Town
OK, that's eleven. Eleven is better than 10. QED.
Godfather II is even better, IMHO.
Definitely Ben Hur and The Longest Day should be in the top 10....
No Doctor Zhivago?
It’s all on on the wheel, it all goes around.
Whatever that means.
Thanks for the laugh, I needed one.
Casablanca, Blade Runner are two that should be on any greats list.
At one time it was probably between “Birth Of A Nation”, “Citizen Kane” and “Gone With The Wind”.
Two of the three are now out of contention because of rampant political correctness. They even changed the name of the D. W. Griffith award.
I do agree that “The Godfather” was a great one but the second Godfather film was even better. I would also put “Dr. Zhivago” in the top ten.
Rocky, Gone With the Wind, Godfather II, and Braveheart all should have been on the list.
Nothing prior to 1970 and only US movies except Lord of the Rings. bleh Almost all box office blockbusters too. I agree most of these 10 are good movies but best ever....not even close.
Meh
Nothing from the great age of movies. Try Thirty Nine Steps
The Lives of Others
Gone With the Wind. These dumb asses don’t understand what a conflagration the civil war was. It tore the country apart. It took a 100 years to start healing. Now they want to scrub that bit history. Morons.
I’d consider Casablanca and The Sting over some of the movies on that list.
Recently watched Gone with the Wind for the first time in years (decades) and found that I appreciated it far more than when I was younger.
How about the original Wizard of Oz?
