Desperate residents are building ropes from sheets in an attempt to escape from their windows as a huge inferno is engulfing a tower block in west London.
The 'horrendous' blaze has struck the 24-storey Grenfell Tower in Latimer Road, White City, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The fire has reportedly spread to five floors, with firefighters struggling to bring it under control. There are 40 fire engines and 200 firefighters at the Lancaster West Estate.
Desperate residents trapped high in the enormous tower were heard 'screaming' for help as they built ropes from sheets in an attempt to reach the ground. One neighbour said he believed someone had jumped from the block.
The residential block has hundreds of residents two of whom are being treated for illness from smoke inhalation.
Terrified residents in their pyjamas have been evacuated as police are pushing people away from the area for fear the block will collapse as debris has started to fall from the tower.

Very true. I've been reading a book on the Fire of London (1666). Back then the people were blaming the Dutch, the French, and the Catholics (Papists) for starting the fire. They even hung a man, Robert Hubert, a French Catholic for it, although his guilt has been discredited as the man was severely mentally and physically disabled. The fire actually started in Pudding Lane, in the bakery of Thomas Farriner. He was never charged or punished for it, but Farriner and his wife were signatories on the Court Bill brought against Hubert.
Did the building collapse?
OMG.
Double posting... well done!
Not yet. They're still trying to put the fire out with hoses, which of course can only go up so high.
1974 was also the year the film "The Towering Inferno" was released.
“If that is a muzzie building there will be a lot of revenge no matter the cause.”
Of course it didn’t collapse.
There are blogs about maintenance and safety issues going back years.
One woman they just interviewed at one of the rescue centers, said her apartment was brand new. She’d only been in it for 6 months. The reporter said he’d heard there had been plastic sheeting on the outside, and asked her if she had seen it on fire. She said that it wasn’t on fire when she left the building to escape.
That’s one very nasty fire!
Kind of an unusual flame pattern going on there.
Yes.....might have been an explosion...the one area looked ‘hot’ for that even after the fire spread...
It looked to me like the fire had spread to ALL floors, not just five.
