VALUES-Loving v. Virginia, 50 years later: More new couples are racially mixed

Fifty years after Mildred and Richard Loving's landmark legal challenge shattered the laws against interracial marriage in the U.S., some couples of different races still talk of facing discrimination, disapproval and sometimes outright hostility from their fellow Americans.

Although the racist laws against mixed marriages are gone, several interracial couples said in interviews they still get nasty looks, insults and sometimes even violence when people find out about their relationships.

"I have not yet counseled an interracial wedding where someone didn't have a problem on the bride's or the groom's side," said the Rev. Kimberly D. Lucas of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C.

As Buckley asked, if things are so bad why do mixed couples who want to have children get married and put young children through all that

Maybe because they love one another, understand that they are Individuals with the God-gtven Right to do as they please; and are willing to deal with the difficulties, because they believe in the Future and a day where skin color won't matter.

I see many mixed couples in my area, and the kids aren't suffering because of it. Their parents are often still afraid to let the teens drive the 'Big Black Cadillac', in case the cops think that they've stolen it and are up to no good (Black folks still fear this stuff!)

But, the "world" has changed, and Buckley (R.I.P.) was speaking many years ago.

“I see many mixed couples in my area, and the kids aren’t suffering because of it.”

That is what I am thinking.

I don’t know if it’s true but I’ve heard that the child of a racially mixed couple qualifies, at least in some cases, for legal “protected class” designation.

They generally aren’t allowed the option of identifying as white - whether they privately do or not.

I'm not following your thoughts here . . . who does not allow the option?

“Acting White” doesn’t go over well with a lot of Black people - all the old-fashioned cultural baggage of ‘passing’, the modern equivalent of somehow being traitorous, &c. And a lot of White people consider anyone mixed to be ‘Black’.

The family I referenced seems to have ignored all of this, and live as individuals, happily partaking of both of their cultures as they please. But with others, I’ve seen a lot of outside pressure on kids to identify in one direction.

I don’t personally believe in the concept of ‘race’. We’re all one species, cultured differently. But the Race Idea is alive and well, and used everywhere to divide.
