Kinda rare, these days, to die from a rattler.

On average, about five people per year die from snake bites in the United States, mostly rattlers but copperheads, corals and mambas as well.

To be clear, the mamba isn't native to the US. Based on Wikipedia, the mamba delivering the fatal bite in the US was kept illegally. Further, coral snake bite deaths are very rare, with the last death coming in 2006.

I am impressed that everything I learned as a Boy Scout getting Reptile Study merit badge is pretty much corroborated in that Wiki article. Almost more amazing is that there are six to seven thousand venomous snake bites yearly in the US but only an average of 5 deaths. For a nation with such a "bad" corporate-driven healthcare system, those are excellent survival odds.

Mambas???? We have mambas in the US? I thought those were in Africa? Islands? Are these in zoos? Inquiring minds want to know. thanks!
